Province’s commitment to pay premium prices attracts bigger players to fledgling sector
Ontario’s promise to pay premium prices for electricity generated from the sun has spurred private developers to launch a spate of projects that could make the province one of the world’s leading solar power producers.  In the past few weeks two consortiums have announced plans for several large solar farms, where hundreds of solar panels, spread out over acres of land, will generate power to be fed into the province’s electrical grid.

Morocco to fund renewable energy

Morocco is set to become the first Arab League country to use government funds to push renewable energy sources.  A new law, which the Moroccan government wants to pass within the next few days and which is to come into effect in July, funds renewable energy sources after the German feed-in tariff model.

California measure would alter solar law

California’s Legislature is considering a proposal that would fix last year’s Million Solar Roof law.  Championed by Calif. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Million Solar Roof law was meant to encourage people to install energy-saving solar panels by offering financial incentives, the Press Enterprise reported. But a regulation that took effect Jan. 1 to help carry out the law has had the reverse effect. It requires participants in the program to pay more costly electricity rates when they need extra power.

U.K. announces solar, wind grants

The British government Friday said grants will be made available again for those who want to install micro-wind turbines and solar panels on their homes.   The Department of Trade and Industry’s Low Carbon Buildings Program has already allocated more than $13.5 million to householders and, following the addition of an extra $11.9 million in the national budget, applications are set to open Tuesday for an estimated $23.6 million remaining.

Thin-film photovoltaic copper indium gallium diselenide is not a phrase that rolls off the tongue.  It could find its way into the daily lexicon, though, if a Tucson firm has its way.  Global Solar Energy Inc. is using the technology to build solar panels that can power everything from an iPod to a soldier’s tactical gear.

A conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, examined solar power as a potential energy source for the future. Energy from the Middle East is largely in the oil sector as the region sits upon the world’s largest oil reserves. Overlooked until now is the potential of solar power as a renewable energy source.
