Morocco to fund renewable energy

Morocco is set to become the first Arab League country to use government funds to push renewable energy sources.  A new law, which the Moroccan government wants to pass within the next few days and which is to come into effect in July, funds renewable energy sources after the German feed-in tariff model.

With the law, Morocco aims to raise the share of renewable energy sources from 2 to 10 percent by 2010. The dominant renewable sources in Morocco are wind and solar energy.

Observers say the country could in the long run sell electricity to Europe.

In Europe, firms selling renewable energy technology such as wind rotors or solar panels could in turn export their goods to Morocco. Germany, which is leading the pack in solar and wind energy technology, is especially interested: As early as last year, some 50 German companies took part in a conference in Rabat, Morocco, to sound out possibilities for economic and scientific cooperation in the Moroccan renewable energy sector.
