Timminco and Q-Cells Replace Solar Grade Silicon Contract

Timminco Limited (“Timminco”) (TSX:TIM) and Q-Cells SE (“Q-Cells”) (FRANKFURT:QCE) announced that they have reached a new supply agreement for solar grade silicon. It will replace the agreement signed in 2008 for the five-year period through 2013. The new agreement contemplates deliveries of 100 mt of solar grade silicon for the remainder of 2009. Volumes, pricing and other terms for deliveries of solar grade silicon in years 2010 to 2013 will be subject to mutual agreement by the end of 2009 and will be negotiated in the context of prevailing solar industry market conditions. Timminco will also return the outstanding deposit of approximately EUR 8.9 million to Q-Cells. The companies agreed to a repayment schedule that will commence in the first quarter 2010 and be completed by the end of 2010. Timminco will pay interest on the outstanding balance at an agreed rate. EuPD Research: 2GW of solar installations expected in Germany in ‘09

According to EuPD Research’s estimations made in the new study: ‘The German PV Market Understand the Demand – Explore the Potential,’ two gigawatts of modules will be installed in Germany in 2009, restoring the country as the largest solar market in the world.  Due to the strong private rooftop market in Germany, the market research firm believes that a total of 99GWp could be installed before saturation. The report has been issued to coincide with the largest solar event in the world, Intersolar 2009, being held this week in Munich, Germany. (more…)

Trina Solar Limited (NYSE: TSL) (“Trina Solar” or the “Company”), a leading integrated manufacturer of solar photovoltaic products from the production of ingots, wafers and cells to the assembly of PV modules, today announced the completion of a 4.7MW photovoltaic facility developed by ErgyCapital at the end of February, 2009.  Trina Solar was the sole supplier of PV modules to ErgyCapital used on the rooftop installation, which was carried out in the town of Serravalle Scrivia in the Piedmont region of Italy. The project is currently Italy’s largest photovoltaic facility and single roof-mounted solar system, involving approximately 38,000 square meters of solar panels. The system is expected to generate approximately 5 GW/hour of electricity per year and will benefit the environment by reducing up to 2,500 tons of CO2 emissions. (more…)

U.S. Department of Energy to allocate another $117.6 million to expand, accelerate solar energy

Some $117.6 million will be allocated to solar-related projects out of $467 million in funds from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act designated to expand and accelerate the development, deployment, and use of geothermal and solar energy throughout the U.S. President Barack Obama said that the funding represents a substantial downpayment that will help the two renewables industries overcome technical barriers, demonstrate new technologies, and provide support for clean energy jobs for years to come. Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK) will build between 100 and 400 electricity-generating mini solar power plants throughout North Carolina over the next two years in one of the first large-scale initiatives of its kind in the U.S., CEO Jim Rogers said today. “Solar and wind are both going to be key parts of our strategy going forward,” Rogers told reporters following the company’s annual meeting. Ascent Solar Technologies Inc said Wednesday it has agreed to provide its thin-film photovoltaic modules for an energy efficient unmanned aerial vehicle being developed by Bye Aerospace.  The solar firm, based in Thornburg, Colorado, said in a statement today that Bye Aerospace has no contract for the airplane but that initial meetings are being conducted with U.S. government entities, according to CNET. Indian company Emmvee Photovoltaics begins solar-module production on 3S turnkey line

3S Swiss Solar Systems has delivered a solar-module turnkey production system to Emmvee Photovoltaics, which has begun manufacturing on the 25-MW line at its factory near Bangalore, India.  “We are extremely satisfied with the line supplied by 3S because we are able to produce a high yield on a very low breakage rate,” explained D.V. Manjunatha, managing director of Emmvee Photovoltaics, which has already ordered the tools necessary to expand its module output to 50 MW. (more…)

S.A.G. Solarstrom is planning to build a free-standing plant comprised of polycrystalline modules at a former military site spanning approximately 30 hectares in Stríbro, around 30 kilometers west of Plzen. Premium modules from Yingli Solar will be used, as well as the recently presented KACO inverter Powador XP350-HV TL. Based on the amount of sun this location receives, the plant will produce some 13,650,000 kWh of energy per year – enough for more than 3,100 four-person households. (more…)

BP Solar to supply 66 MW of PV modules for Solar Energy Park

Under the terms of a deal announced at Intersolar Europe this week, RGE Energy will use hundreds of thousands of BP Solar crystalline-silicon PV panels for 66 MW of installations, including a 46-MWp plant to be built in Koethen, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.  The project launch is planned for the third quarter; the approval procedure is being processed, and by the end of the year, all of the 220-W modules should be set for installation, the companies said.
