THE sudden scrapping of solar rebates caught environmentally aware residents on the hop last week. The Federal Government decided last Tuesday to end its $8000 rebate scheme for domestic solar PV installation – three weeks ahead of schedule.  Sustainable Hepburn Association Renewing the Earth spokeswoman Anneke Deutsch, who co-ordinated a solar panel bulk-buy offer on behalf of SHARE members, said there had been rumours that the offer was “over subscribed”. Suntech Starts First 1MW+ Rooftop Solar Project in Jiangsu Province

Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd. (NYSE: STP), the world’s largest manufacturer of crystalline silicon photovoltaic (PV) modules, announced today that it will build a 1.5MW solar system in HuaiAn City, Jiangsu Province, China in collaboration with Jiangsu Guoxin Asset Management Group Ltd. (Jiangsu Guoxin Group). The solar system, which is expected to be completed by October 2009, will be the first one megawatt plus, grid connected solar system installed in Jiangsu Province.  Suntech Energy Engineering, Suntech’s China-based systems integration team, will design and install the 1.5MW solar system on 19,000 square meters of the rooftop of buildings housing a subsidiary of Jiangsu Guoxin Group in HuaiAn City. The project is expected to be eligible to receive the recently announced subsidy for roof-mounted solar systems. (more…)

Kyocera Corporation (President: Tetsuo Kuba; hereafter “Kyocera”) announced today that it is supplying solar modules for the new Toyota Prius solar ventilation system, an optional feature for the hybrid car model introduced in Japan by Toyota Motor Corporation (hereafter “Toyota”) on May 18. The system ventilates the air inside of the car by using the electricity generated by the solar module on the rooftop to drive the fans while the car is parked during the daytime. Indian company Emmvee Photovoltaics begins solar-module production on 3S turnkey line

3S Swiss Solar Systems has delivered a solar-module turnkey production system to Emmvee Photovoltaics, which has begun manufacturing on the 25-MW line at its factory near Bangalore, India.  “We are extremely satisfied with the line supplied by 3S because we are able to produce a high yield on a very low breakage rate,” explained D.V. Manjunatha, managing director of Emmvee Photovoltaics, which has already ordered the tools necessary to expand its module output to 50 MW. (more…)

Toyota Motor Corp is secretly developing a vehicle that will be powered solely by solar energy in an effort to turn around its struggling business with a futuristic ecological car, a top business daily reported Thursday.  The Nikkei newspaper, however, said it will be years before the planned vehicle will be available on the market. Toyota’s offices were closed Thursday and officials were not immediately available for comment. (more…)

Oerlikon to outsource production of thin-film PV equipment to Flextronics in future

Switzerland-based Oerlikon, in preparation for fast emerging orders for production equipment of amorphous silicon (a-Si) thin-film photovoltaic (PV) modules from the Asian market once the global economy recovers, will outsource the production of such equipment to Singapore-based EMS provider Flextronics International, with components supply from Taiwan-based makers, according to Oerlikon Taiwan.
