Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd.  one of the world’s leading manufacturers of photovoltaic (PV) cells and modules, today announced Suntech’s participation in a solar-energy system constructed for the roof of the town hall in Genk, Belgium.  The project was engineered by Netherlands-based Oskomera Solar Power Solutions (OSPS) in collaboration with Belgium-based ENECO Energie.  The system consists of approximately 1,260 Suntech solar modules with a capacity of 239kW. Project engineering, delivery and installation was executed within a short, three-month time frame. (more…)

Meinl International Power Ltd. (MIP) has signed contracts for the development of a solar farm in Andalusia/Spain. The plants will be constructed in one of Europe´s most Southern and therefore sunniest regions by a consortium headed by Alpine Energie Deutschland GmbH. The solar farm is designed for a total capacity of 15.4 MWp. The general contractor has agreed to complete the project by the end of September 2008 in order to be eligible for a favourable feed-in tariff.

Aleo Solar  AG today announced that it has won another large contract from SOLARTIA. aleo solar will supply the Spanish project developer with modules for a new solar farm in the Navarre province.  This order is expected to generate sales worth nearly EUR 17 million. Together with the orders reported in December, the total agreed volume of the Spanish project now amounts to nearly EUR 62 million. SOLARTIA also has the option of ordering another shipment of modules in 2008 worth nearly EUR 5 million. (more…)

Fraunhofer ISE sets new record for solar PV inverter efficiency

A maximum efficiency rating of 98.5 percent for photovoltaic inverters has been achieved by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in a test using prototype silicon carbide-based MOSFETs manufactured by CREE, Inc., USA. These are the highest efficiency results reported for photovoltaic inverters to date, ISE reports in a press release. (more…)

The city is moving ahead on becoming a solar-friendly city. Already the city has solar installations at nine locations and a large project about to be installed in downtown Phoenix.  Further, the city has applied to the federal government for a $200,000 matching grant to promote solar energy.

Clean Solar Inc., a solar photovoltaic installer for residential and commercial projects, has announced it will offer a $500 charitable donation on behalf of its customers.  Clean Solar will allow customers to choose the charity of their choice. For those who do not have a favorite charity, Clean Solar will offer four nonprofits to choose from: Sierra Club, Audobon Society, National Wildlife Federation, and The Grameen Foundation.

Bay State photovoltaic manufacturer Evergreen Solar Inc. is working with the Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Co. (MMWEC) to advance solar power opportunities for customers of Massachusetts municipal utilities, according to officials.  The pair intends to install pilot photovoltaic systems on schools, public buildings and other high-profile sites in communities served by municipal utilities. The aim of the installations is to serve as a visual statement of MMWEC’s commitment to solar power in conjunction with Governor Deval Patrick’s “Commonwealth Solar” program, according to Marlborough-based Evergreen Solar.

The Central Energy Fund has announced a massive drive to install solar-powered traffic lights at critical intersections in cities, to ease traffic congestion caused by load shedding. Mputumi Damane, Chief Executive Officer of the Central Energy Fund (CEF) Group of Companies said this was an urgent intervention to help alleviate the chaos on the roads which come as a result of load shedding and traffic lights going off. “Whenever there is load-shedding, it impacts negatively on the economy of our country,” said Mr Damane.

Embattled energy utility Eskom intends to incentivise electricity users for switching from coal-generated electricity to solar power, South African state news agency BuaNews said. The report comes as South Africans face at least five years of power shortages as Eskom upgrades its electricity generation capacity to cater for booming demand. According to Eskom, the solar incentive programme will centre on solar water heating, which energy experts say account for between 30% and 50% of household electricity consumption. The incentive scheme, which could be rolled out within weeks, will see the selling price of solar systems reduced.
