Bay State photovoltaic manufacturer Evergreen Solar Inc. is working with the Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Co. (MMWEC) to advance solar power opportunities for customers of Massachusetts municipal utilities, according to officials. The pair intends to install pilot photovoltaic systems on schools, public buildings and other high-profile sites in communities served by municipal utilities. The aim of the installations is to serve as a visual statement of MMWEC’s commitment to solar power in conjunction with Governor Deval Patrick’s “Commonwealth Solar” program, according to Marlborough-based Evergreen Solar.
The Commonwealth Solar program was announced in December 2007, and promises $68 million in state funds over the course of four years to support solar initiatives in the state. Financial details of the partnership were not disclosed. The Evergreen-MWEC partnership is also expected to develop a municipal program that will provide incentives for customers who live in municipal utility communities to purchase solar systems for both residential and commercial installations.
Publicly-traded Evergreen Solar makes an array of products for the solar energy industry, including products based on its proprietary String Ribbon wafer technology. The company reported $103 million in revenue in 2006, though it also posted a $26.6 million loss.
