By all accounts, the 2007 Solar Decathlon resembled a modern auto show – the hype around energy efficiency, the glimpses of future technology, the deja vu as German engineering upstages the American effort.   But while their automobile counterparts fret, American green tech engineers believe there are fortunes to be made in everything ranging from low-energy heating and cooling appliances to heat-efficient materials to whole modular homes that are starting to hit the market. On Tuesday, the director of the decathlon recapped some highlights of the competition, where twenty universities one-upped each other with fascinating feats of innovation.

German solar cell producer Q- Cells AG has announced plans to invest in a production plant in Malaysia next year, local media reported today.  The company plans to build a major manufacturing complex for photovoltaic products in Malaysia, its first in Asia, Malaysian International Trade and Industry Minister Rafidah Aziz said at a media briefing in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

“The setting up of such a solar cell and modules plant will contribute towards the government’s initiatives in the creation of a solar industry cluster in the country,” the New Straits Times quoted Rafidah as saying.   Q-Cells was expected to invest more than 1 billion ringgit (310. US$56 million) between 2009 and 2010 in the first phase of the manufacturing complex, Malaysian Industrial Development Authority director-general R. Karunakaran said. However, the exact location has not been confirmed.

“Negotiations have been held over the past six months and we have been competing with others in the region. We are extremely pleased they chose us. We hope this will spur other companies and service providers to look to Malaysia, too,” the New Straits Times quoted Karunakaran as saying.  Q-Cells’ facility will be the second major photovoltaic-related investment in Malaysia, the first being that of the US-based thin-film module manufacturer, First Solar, at the Kulim High-Tech Park in northern Kedah state.

The solar PV market continued to grow in 2007, both in installed capacity and production although it was held back by a worldwide shortage of solar grade silicon. Opinions differ within the industry as to the future duration of this shortage and these are discussed in the report. 2006 and 2007 have been significant, with the entry of an important new player in the global market, China. Chinese solar PV companies have developed very fast and a number have conducted IPOs in China and other countries. A mushrooming production capacity for solar cells and modules has been accompanied by growing production and re-cycling of silicon. Domestic demand in China has not kept pace and it is an export oriented industry to date. Germany, followed by Japan and the USA still remains the global leader, but new countries are entering the market and the industry is spreading beyond its historical areas. These developments have been accompanied by some uncertainty because of a breakdown in the statistical recording system in Germany, the largest market, with half the world’s installed capacity.
