The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) has awarded Borrego Solar Systems, Inc. the design and installation of 100 kilowatts of solar power for the Deer Island Water Treatment plant in Winthrop, Massachusetts.  The solar installation, due to be completed by the end of 2007, is projected to generate over 100,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year, and is the first of 12 major solar projects slated for completion over the next year in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  The MWRA issued a statement saying, “We are very enthusiastic about this project as it is the first such contract of this type that we have awarded in the history of the MWRA.” (more…)

As the Delsea Regional school district decides to move forward on a large solar energy project, the timing of its decision may cost it nearly $500,000. That’s because it is catching the state midstream in changing what has been the most generous renewable energy incentive program in the nation. The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities’ Clean Energy Program promotes increased energy efficiency and the use of clean, renewable energy sources, like solar, by offering financial incentives, programs and services for residential, commercial and municipal customers. The program is funded by the state’s ratepayers, who pay a societal benefits charge on their electricity/gas bills.

DT Solar, a Turner Renewable Energy Company, and ProCaps Laboratories/TWC Construction today announced that they will work together to design and install a 700 kW solar electric generating system at the headquarters of ProCaps and TWC in Henderson, Nevada.  The system will be the largest of its type in the state of Nevada.   The 700 kW system will be installed as part of a steel structure covering a parking lot adjacent to the 200,000 square foot ProCaps headquarters. Both ProCaps and TWC Construction will be supplied with electricity generated by the system.  The system, in conjunction with an existing solar system, will provide nearly 1 MW of solar power during the midday hours, meeting the electric needs of both facilities for many days of the year.

DT Solar, a Turner Renewable Energy company, and Hall’s Warehouse Corporation, a family-owned refrigerated and frozen food storage and distribution company, today announced an agreement to build a 2 MW solar electric power system to supply electricity to their facility in South Plainfield, New Jersey.  When completed, this project will be the largest rooftop solar electric system serving a private company in the United States.  The solar power system will be located in South Plainfield, NJ, on one of Hall’s seven state-of-the-art frozen and refrigerated warehouses serving the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. The solar array will consist of approximately 13,500 solar modules, will produce nearly 3 million kWh of clean energy and will eliminate more than 2 million pounds of CO2  emissions annually.

A proposal to equip Cabrillo College with $8 million worth of solar panels — in what would be one of the county’s largest solar projects — is looking brighter.  A three-way deal between the college, Santa Cruz-based Solar Technologies and San Francisco-based Generating Assets is in the works to meet up to 20 percent of the community college’s power needs. Under the proposed 15- to 20-year agreement, Solar Technologies would install and maintain the panels, Generating Assets would provide the bulk of the financing, and the college would pay Generating Assets for the power generated. The University of California, San Diego’s Rady School of Management and Kyocera today inaugurated the 18 kilowatt Kyocera solar power system atop Otterson Hall, a new facility for the Rady School. The system will provide an additional power source for the school’s 50,000 square foot facility on the UC San Diego campus, which will minimize the school’s and the campus’ energy costs for decades to come. This student-driven project makes the Rady School one of the first business schools in the country to use solar panels on their main campus building.

During Fresno’s sweltering August, Steve Durbano watched his electricity meter spin backward when it was sunny, and he paid a mere $22.07 to PG&E — a savings of about $400.  His secret: 28 solar panels installed on the roof of his north Fresno home that create enough power for his family of five — and even provide additional electricity to the power grid most of the day. “I don’t dread the PG&E bill coming,” he said as he showed off his solar system Saturday during the third annual Fresno Solar Tour.

It’s another brilliant day at the world headquarters of the hottest company on the planet. Some shirtless employees are playing a lunchtime game of volleyball while others stride across campus with laptops tucked under their arms. The place fairly crackles with energy, and in more ways than one.  Up here on a roof at Google’s leafy and sprawling Mountain View, Calif., campus, with the shouts of the volleyball game just barely audible, sunlight glints off 9212 polysilicon solar panels stretching out toward the horizon. Amid the irregular jumble of angular roofs, a single south-facing wave stands out, a pitch and roll frozen in place against a backdrop of foothills.
