Japanese automobile manufacturer Nissan Motor Co. will install 606 solar panels at its Barcelona vehicle plant by the end of this summer. The new initiative complements other programs either already in place at or planned for other Nissan facilities, including six wind turbines at its UK-based Sunderland plant and 732 panels slated for installation this summer at its light commercial vehicle plant in Avila, Spain.

The turbines at Sunderland currently generate 5% of that plant’s annual electricity needs.  The Barcelona plant project consists of 480 photovoltaic solar cells for electricity generation, with the remaining 126 panels used to heat water for various industrial processes. Taken together, the solar project will cover a surface of 3,000 square meters and generate 308,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per year.
