CTL Scotland bids for £50m deal for solar powered street lights in the Middle East

CTL, the company behind a solar powered streetlight and wireless internet system tested at the University of Abertay last year, said it is close to a deal with a Middle East country worth tens of millions of pounds. Calum McRae, head of CTL Scotland, said the company was one of two bidders for the project which, if successful, would supply up to 12,000 solar powered street lights, also wi-fi enabled.
The bid was worth more than £50 million, McRae said, completed over several phases. The project would provide internet coverage to around 180sq km. McRae said the company’s rival for the project was only supplying solar lighting. As well as weather conditions which would allow the solar system to operate at maximum efficiency, McRae said a project over such a large area would save millions on cabling costs, and provide internet where it is not available elsewhere. The company claims installing 4,000 solar street lights would reduce emissions by 1,900 tonnes a year.
