Taiwan exported 900MWp of crystalline silicon solar cells in 2008, taking up 16.4% of the total 5.5GWp of photovoltaic (PV) systems installed around the world, according to the Photovoltaics Technology Center (PTC) under the government-sponsored Industrial Technology Research Institute in Taiwan.
In addition to solar cells, Taiwan exported 100MWp of PV modules and 5.5MWp of PV systems, accounting for only 11.1% and 0.6% of the solar cell export volume, PTC indicated. This represents a serious unbalanced development of Taiwan’s PV supply chain and implies Taiwan’s less competitiveness in PV applications internationally, PTC general director Chung-wen Lan said.
