By producing thin-film solar cells on equipment from EPV Solar, Taiwan-based Formosun Solar indicated that volume production has already started with shortage already observed. The company also stressed the advantage the large size of its solar cells has in comparison to conventional thin-film solar cells.
Formosun said it plans for an annual capacity of 5.5 peak megawatt (MWp) for its first production line, with expansion already planned. Formosun highlighted that its solar cells are ideal for building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems as its solar cells are large in size (1,245×635mm) and are able to generate 40-44 watts of power per module.
Formsosun forged its partnership with EPV Solar in October 2006. It noted that the solar cells produced on EPV’s equipment have been already certified according to UL and IEC 61646. EPV’s BIPV products have been ordered by Microsoft for use in the “School of the Future” project – a collaboration between Microsoft and the Philadelphia School District in the US.
