Imagine powering your home by harnessing the sun’s energy – without having to install costly solar panels.  A bill advancing on Capitol Hill could allow Utah’s sun-kissed St. George to lead out with a city-built solar project where residents could buy shares, tap the energy and receive tax credits as if they had put the equipment on their own roofs. St. George City Attorney Shawn Guzman said the city already has land set aside for the solar arrays near its sewage treatment plant. (more…)

Mobile phones long ago began conquering parts of the world that are far away from the nearest electrical substation. But the rising price of oil is exposing a problem with the networks that connect mobile handsets together.  In the far reaches of places like India or Africa, where companies such as Ericsson (ERIC) or Nokia Siemens Networks, a joint venture of Nokia (NOK) and Siemens (SI), are installing new cellular base stations at a furious pace, the facilities almost always get their power from diesel-powered generators. The solar industry is giving rise to a new crop of small businesses, but these companies are hitting roadblocks when it comes to filling their “green collar” jobs.  Despite unprecedented interest in clean technology, the small firms that make up most of the solar industry in the Bay Area are struggling because they need more workers who are trained and certified to complete the complex tasks associated with photovoltaic systems, according to the first comprehensive report on the solar industry in the Bay Area.

Ascent Solar, a budding solar energy firm in Colorado, announced a new partnership this morning with ITOCHU Corp. of Japan. The partnership could help Ascent distribute its solar panels in Japan and other parts of the world.  Ascent makes flexible solar panels or modules that can be used in building materials. It has a deal with a Norwegian company that will use Ascent’s technology in curtains.

At the end of 2007, Sharp Corporation became the first company to reach 2 GW in cumulative solar cell production volume in the world. Sharp has been involved with solar power for 49 years: the company began research into solar cells in 1959 to develop a new technology to follow the success of the television and started mass-production in 1963. It is estimated that the current world’s cumulative solar cell production volume is 8 GW, meaning Sharp has produced a full one-quarter of this.

Sharp Corp.   is set to enter the market for storage battery systems for houses by tying up with Daiwa House Industry Co. <1925> and Dai Nippon Printing Co. <7912>, informed sources said Tuesday.  Sharp will purchase about 600 million yen worth of new shares to be issued in March by Eliiy Power Co., a Tokyo-based battery-making jointly venture between Daiwa House and Dai Nippon Printing, informed sources said. Florida’s strong sunshine could make it an exporter of electrical power in the near future, a leader in the industry is telling people at a local conference this week.  “Florida could become a net energy exporter,” said John O’Donnell, executive vice president of Palo Alto, Calif.-based Ausra, in an advance interview with the South Florida Business Journal.  “The costs will be 20 percent higher here than in the desert Southwest, but still lower than the rest of the southeast. Places like Georgia and the Carolinas may want Florida’s power,” he said. (more…)
