Ltd. to provide a photovoltaic module assembly line for that company’s operations in New Delhi, India.  Alpex is an international trading company. This will be the company’s first solar energy facility and will support its growth into both the standard module, and Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) markets. GT SolarThe Silicon Mine B.V., a solar grade silicon start-up, has placed a $91 million order with GT Solar for 48 rod, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) reactors and silicon tetrachloride (STC) hydrogenation conversion units for its first polysilicon plant based in The Netherlands. Near Pazardjik city (Southern Bulgaria) will be build the biggest solar station in Eastern Europe.  It is foreseen to be located over an area of 2,000 sq m.  The mayor of Pazardjik already had entered into the municipality council suggestion for the purchase of the land, estimated to almost 480,000 BGN (240,000 EUR). The investments are on the amount of over 30 million BGN (15 million EUR). (more…)

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a German research giant announced Saturday that they would open a sustainable energy research center near the university’s campus that will employ at least 60 people. The goal of what will be called the MIT-Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems is to be a premier site in the country for rapid development of solar and other energy efficient technologies, said MIT and Fraunhofer officials. The center, which will employ mainly scientists and engineers, was announced by MIT president Susan Hockfield, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and energy and environmental affairs Secretary Ian A. Bowles during a two-day MIT energy conference. (more…)

The MIT Energy Initiative and the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative have launched a new joint project with the Fraunhofer Institute, a German R&D organization, that will be based in Massachusetts and will focus on developing and commercializing sustainable energy systems.  Electricity provider National Grid has also signed on to the project, acting as the principal utility member of the center’s Partnership with Industry segment, and committing $1 million over the next five years to the project.
