During the Tenth Five Year Plan period, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy had sanctioned projects for installation of 1500 kWp capacity of grid connected solar photovoltaic power plants in the country and projects for a total capacity of 900 kWp have been installed.

Two more stores operated by Safeway Inc. converted to solar power Monday in honor of the 39th annual Earth Day, being observed Tuesday.  Pleasanton-based Safeway (NYSE: SWY) unveiled the new power systems at stores in Fairfield and Placerville, two of the 23 stores in California being converted to solar power. The solar systems reduce the stores’ reliance on traditional fossil fuels, the emissions of which most scientists implicate as the chief cause of global warming. (more…)

A new clean energy system is powering Miami City Hall, making Miami the first major U.S. city to power its City Hall with solar and alternative energy.  The City Hall’s entire interior lighting system has been upgraded with state-of-the-art energy efficient lamps and fixtures. In addition, four state-of-the-art photovoltaic solar panels have been installed on the south lawn. Together, these efforts will reduce over half of the City Hall lighting load and cut the building’s energy bill by an estimated $9,000 per year.

After almost a year of hammering out details, the Erie County Legislature passed an sales tax exemption for solar energy technology.  New York State has already amended the tax law to eliminating state sales and compensating use taxes from solar energy equipment and gave municipalities the option to do the same. After a public hearing on March 27, the county legislature decided to go ahead with its plan to do the same to bring some the investment in solar energy to Western New York, said Legislator Robert Reynolds, Jr., D-Hamburg. According to data provided by New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program[1], Trinity Solar (formerly known as Trinity Heating & Air, Inc.) is the largest installer of solar power systems in New Jersey, the second largest market in the United States[2]. Since the inception of the program and according to the data provided by the Office of Clean Energy (OCE), Trinity has installed over 423 systems with the next nearest competitor only installing 197 systems. Overall, Trinity Solar has installed more than twice as many systems as any other installer and continues to increase its leadership position. In 2007, Trinity Solar installed nearly 3 times as many systems as its nearest competitor. (more…)

As more technology companies seek to extend their reach in rural areas not served by the national power grid, infrastructure provider Kenya Data Networks (KDN) has announced a partnership that will see it provide alternatively powered computers.  The company will provide hardware as it meets new environmental standards.  KDN and US-based non-profit making organisation, Inveneo, plan to provide solar and battery powered computers in rural areas to allow users to access technology with better infrastructure in place.
