A solar-powered lamp, which is as thin as a magazine cover and sticks onto most surfaces has been developed by a Hong Kong inventor, a media report said.  The lamp won designer Keikko Lee, 26, the gold price in South Korea’s first international design competition held in October, the South China Morning Post said.  Lee said the lamp has electroluminescent material on one side and solar panels and sensors on the other. Duke Energy has decided to cut in half its $100 million distributed solar rooftop program after the utility was criticized during the permitting process by the Vote Solar Initiative and Wal-Mart, among others, the state Utility Commission over cost recovery and monopolistic practices. The new program will spend $50 million to install 10 megawatts of solar panels in North Carolina. Under the new plan the average customer will pay an extra 8 cents per month as opposed to an extra 34 cents under the original proposal. (more…)

LG Electronics Inc (066570.KS: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) said on Tuesday it would set up two solar cell production lines at the site of its suspended plasma panel plant, as the company seeks to find a new growth engine in the renewable energy business.  LG, which acquired a solar cell business from LG Chem Ltd (051910.KS: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) in June, said it would spend 220 billion won ($168 million) on the two solar cell lines, which will start mass production in early 2010 and early 2011, respectively. As part of its efforts to reduce pollution and create alternative sources of energy to meet growing demand, the city of Dubai has launched a major initiative to harness solar energy.  Chairman of the Dubai government’s investment vehicle Dubai World Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem has launched Solar Technologies, the Middle East’s largest photovoltaic manufacturing facility, in the course of the Green Dubai World Forum-2008, currently underway here. Solyndra, Inc., a manufacturer of proprietary photovoltaic (PV) systems designed to optimize solar electricity production on commercial rooftops, announced it has signed a new long-term sales contract with solar integrator GeckoLogic GmbH, based in Wetzlar, Germany. The Euro-based contract value equates to approximately $250 million and extends through 2012. The GeckoLogic contract is part of Solyndra’s previously-announced total contractual backlog of approximately $1.2 billion.
