SUBANG JAYA: The public can start bidding to install a solar energy panel technology, which can generate electricity from the sunlight on the roofs of their new or existing homes and offices from Dec 1 until March 30 next year. Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik said the Government had introduced the National Suria 1000 programme to equip the solar photovoltaic (PV) roofs in 1,000 houses in a move to educate the public on the potential of solar energy.

In August, SunTech Power (NYSE: STP) established SunTech America, a wholly owned subsidiary aimed at expanding the company’s U.S. market share. It now appears that the subsidiary has just landed its first big victory. Earlier today, the company announced a multi-year contract to supply solar modules to a division of SunEdison, North America’s largest solar-energy service provider.  The contract is reportedly valued between $50 million and $90 million over its life span. The size of the contract, however, is less important than the speed with which SunTech has landed such a major deal.

Whatever next for the Arabian city that has an artificial ski slope covered in snow even when the temperature hits 50oC? Not to mention the world’s tallest building, some 7,000 metres (2,300 ft) high, rising above palm-shaped artificial archipelagos in the warm waters of the Persian Gulf. Oh, and a growth rate of 16% and a population where foreigners in need of “luxury” homes outnumber locals. Well, what about the world’s first rotating skyscraper?

Commissioned by the Dubai Property Ring, a firm of UK-based developers, the 30-storey apartment block will use solar energy to power 20 electric motors that will rotate the tower through 360 degrees over the course of a week. “This will be a fair building,” says Nick Cooper, the British engineer working with MG Bennet and Associates of Rotherham, which will build the mechanism. “Everybody will have the same views for the same amount of time.”

Total and French electric utility EDF will tomorrow inaugurate a photovoltaic solar panel production plant owned by their joint subsidiary Tenesol. Located in Saint-Martin-du-Touch in the Greater Toulouse region, the plant has a current capacity of 17 MW per year and is expected to eventually create around 100 direct and indirect jobs. For more than 20 years, Tenesol has specialized in designing, manufacturing, installing and operating photovoltaic solar systems.

Two Nobel laureates will render their support to research work to be conducted at the soon-to-be-inaugurated Institute of Innovations and Advanced Studies at National Cheng Kung University in Tainan.  Alan MacDiarmid, a New Zealand-born US chemist who, with two other chemists, won the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 2000, and Aaron Ciechanover from the Israel Institute of Technology, who won the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 2004 with two other scientists, are participating in the research to be carried out by the institute to promote innovation and excellence in research, university officials said.
