The world’s largest stadium-integrated photovoltaic system went into operation this week on the STADE DE SUISSE Wankdorf Bern. After the additional installation of 2,808 solar modules, the stadium now has 7,930 modules from the Japanese technology company Kyocera, providing an overall output of 1,346.774 kWp. The expanded system will produce 1,134,045 kWh per year and save on the emission of 630 tons of CO2 annually. (more…)

The completion of the solar power installation at one of Pacific Gas & Electric’s service facilities is the latest example of PG&E’s role in bringing solar power to San Francisco. Premier Power worked closely with PG&E to provide them with solar power systems that were both financially smart and practical.  The 207kW solar power system is comprised of two solar arrays; 127kW solar tracker and 80kw building integrated. The 80kW building integrated solar electric system, which features 368 of Sharp’s solar power modules, is made of 3 smaller arrays that include, two 15kW solar facades and one 50kW roof-top array. The 127kW single-axis solar electric tracker system, which features 588 of SunPower’s solar power modules, was designed for double-duty; not only do they shade and protect cars, they also provide steady, reliable solar power. The combined solar power systems will produce approximately 5,701,380 kWh over the system lifetime. (more…)

Once the system is installed, homeowners pay for only the energy used, the same way they are currently billed by a utility company.

With a marked decline in insurgent activity in recent months, Fallujah is on the road to a much brighter future. And the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is overseeing a project helping shine light in that direction.  That work involves the installation of 740 new state-of-the-art solar street lights that are illuminating Fallujah’s main roadways. Currently, the city’s main east-west thoroughfare has the new lights up and functioning. Work in other parts of the city is continuing.  “Residents tell us how much that project means to their community,” said U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project engineer Troy Swofford. “City leaders and the police are thrilled. It’s getting a lot of positive attention.”

Stirling Council is the first local authority in Scotland to install solar powered Aura parking machines.  The council has demonstrated its green credentials by purchasing a total of 59 solar Auras from Metric Parking.  Stirling, which has a total of 120 Metric parking machines on its streets and in its car parks, chose the solar Aura because it will have less impact on the environment. Costco Wholesale Corp. and REC Solar, a provider of residential and commercial solar electric systems, have entered into an agreement to install a total of 2.5 megawatts of photovoltaics (PV) on four of Costco’s warehouse locations in California and Hawaii. The solar electric system on the Costco warehouse in Kona will be comprised of 3,888 Mitsubishi 175UD4 panels, 2 Xantrex 225S-480-P inverters and 1 Xantrex 100S-480-P inverter.

Solar panels are becoming increasingly popular in Napa County, as they are installed on rooftops everywhere from the newest subdivisions of American Canyon to Calistoga wineries. Napa County is solar friendly, but on average Napa County residents pay higher permitting fees to install solar panels than other Northern California property owners.  The county produces more solar energy per capita than nine other Bay Area counties, according to the Northern California Solar Association, a group of solar advocates. Yet a survey of 131 jurisdictions in 13 Northern California counties by the Sierra Club found that Yountville, Calistoga and the city of Napa charge on average $141 to $324 more than other Bay Area jurisdictions to install an average-sized residential system.
