Suntech gets manufacturing deals from Lumeta and Akeena, and introduces two new product lines.  The Solar Power 2007 conference in Long Beach, Calif., has only just begun, but China’s Suntech Power (NYSE: STP) is shining bright as an early winner.  The world’s third largest solar cell manufacturer in terms of production output, and the leader in China, racked up four announcements this week, taking on two new customers and releasing two new product lines at the conference.

Leading German renewable energy firms have shown interest to manufacture solar cells and air-conditioners in India, taking advantage of abundant solar energy in the country.  Prozop-Solar and Q-Cells have recently held talks with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, sharing their plans to set up manufacturing facilities in India. Durham University has made significant improvements in thin-film solar cells. “We have done a lot of work measuring recombination at grain boundaries and on the control and increase of grain size,” principal investigator Professor Ken Durose told EW.  Durose and his team are working on thin-film cells, three years into the Government’s sustainable power ‘Supergen’ project. LDK Solar Co., Ltd. (NYSE:LDK), a leading manufacturer of multicrystalline solar wafers, announced today that it has signed contracts to supply multicrystalline solar wafers and to purchase polysilicon production equipment from Sunways AG. Under the terms of the wafer supply contract, LDK Solar will deliver approximately 1 GW of multicrystalline solar wafers to Sunways over a ten-year period starting in 2008. Under the terms of the equipment purchase agreement, LDK Solar will purchase two readily available Siemens technology-based reactors and related plant equipment from Sunways. In addition, Sunways AG will provide support services to LDK Solar during the facility construction and the ramp up of polysilicon production. (more…)

Pioneering stained glass windows provide solar energy

Mention solar energy and people often think of individual roof-mounted panels. Mention stained glass and people think of traditional windows in churches. Not too many people would think to combine them, but artist Sarah Hall has done this and more, with the first stained glass installation in North America to utilize solar cells.
