RENEWABLE-ENERGY company Dulas has secured a major new order from Ghana’s health ministry for its solar-powered vaccine fridges.  The deal for the Machynlleth- based firm comes after promoting its vaccine fridge at the MedicAfrica exhibition in Lusaka, Zambia, two years ago.

One of these fridges was presented to the Zambian Government as a gift from the Welsh Assembly Government at the trade show and Dulas representatives also delivered a letter to Zambia’s President Mwanawasa from First Minister Rhodri Morgan.

Safeway stores up solar power

Safeway Inc. (NYSE: SWY), already California’s largest commercial consumer of renewable energy, recently took steps to solidify its lead by switching the first of 23 planned stores over to solar power in early September 2007.   The 55,000-square-foot Dublin store now has 1,000 roof-top solar panels, which the company says will generate 7,500 megawatt hours of electricity per year. Safeway also buys wind energy to power its retail gas stations, and the company joined the Chicago Climate Exchange in 2006 with a pledge to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 390,000 tons below 2000 levels.

Large cities with high electricity demand can now apply to be a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) 2008 Solar City. Yesterday the DOE announced that the 2008 Solar America Cities program will fund up to twelve cities that demonstrate their commitment to building a sustainable solar infrastructure.

Berkeley, CA Offers Residents Unique Financing Option for Solar

The City of Berkeley, California is set to become the first city in the U.S. to allow property owners to pay for solar system installation and energy efficiency improvements as a long-term assessment on their individual property tax bill.  Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates will ask the City Council to approve the framework for a “Sustainable Energy Financing District” at their November 6th Council meeting.

Milpitas, CA schools mull solar power for campuses

When recycling was introduced to schools years ago, parents who accidentally dropped a glass bottle or aluminum can into the trash got a critical look from their youngster. Now, those recycling-conscious students who have grown up to have children might soon be getting similar discriminating stares when their kids notice that their roof has no solar panels.  Following the lead of San Jose Unified School District, the Milpitas Unified School District has begun taking steps to receive as much as 30 percent of its energy needs from on-campus solar panels.
