WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — A national solar energy firm based in Vermont — groSolar — announced today it is buying an Oregon-based solar energy distribution company, making it the fifth largest solar distribution and installation firm in the country, and the first with true reach across all of North America. The purchase of Energy Outfitters gives groSolar access to key markets in the western United States, namely California, as well as western Canada. The company already has offices on the East Coast, according to company officials. The purchase price was not released.

Dr. Kedar Gupta will leave his position as chief executive officer of GT Solar in Merrimack later this month after 12 years. He founded the company in 1994.

Kedar gupta
Background: Gupta grew up in India and moved to the U.S. for a research fellowship in 1968.
Education: Ph.D. in material sciences from the State University of New York in Stony Brook.
Job History: His first job was helping make silicon wafers as a research engineer with Monsanto Electronic Materials Co. in Missouri. He was an operations manager for a high-tech company in Cincinnati when he accepted a job Nashua in 1985 at Ferrofluidics Corp. In 1994, Gupta and John Talbott co-founded GT Solar.
Future endeavors: Helping tech companies with exporting overseas; further involvement with the Small Business Development Center at UNH; possible book.

Successful profit sharing program enters its fifth year. The reason for this is the successful Employee Profit Sharing Scheme (German abbreviation: GOMAB) introduced by the group for the employees in Freiberg in 2003. Norwegian REC announces heavy investment in their solar cell facility in Telemark

The Norwegian solar energy adventure continues, with Renewable Energy Corporation (REC) announcing heavy investment in their facility in Telemark.

REC said that they would be doubling their production capacity of silicon wafers, needed to manufacture solar cell panels, at their Herøya facility in Telemark County in southern Norway. The investment will make Herøya the world’s undisputed largest facility for this type of production and will require a total expenditure of NOK 2.5 billion (USD 407 million). The two new additions to the existing plant will begin operation in Q4 2008 and Q2 2009.

REC estimates annual sales income from Herøya will be between NOK 5-6 billion, according to a bulletin released to the Oslo stock exchange on Wednesday morning.

Nanosolar to Build a thin-film manufacturing plant in San Jose, California

Nanosolar announced Tuesday it will build a thin-film manufacturing plant in San Jose, California, on the site of a former Cisco facility, and another near Berlin.  The startup says it’s ‘on track.’ The world’s largest solar PV factory will begin production in Bay Area in 2007. The Red Herring 100 company says the sites total 647,000 square feet, and will be used for manufacturing solar cells and panels, for research and development, and for offices.

Dubai: Investments in Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO) exceed Dh5.8 billion, a senior DSO official said yesterday. “The Dh5.8 billion investments include infrastructure, landscaping, villas, staff accommodation, sewage treatment plant as well as the DSO headquarters, besides the approved developers’ investment in tens of towers,” Shahla Ahmad Abdul Razak, DSO Deputy CEO, told Gulf News yesterday.

DSO, the emirate’s own version of Silicon Valley, may increase or even double its investment in a few years as it receives new applications to set up businesses in the DSO zone. DSO announced yesterday that Europe’s Optical Disc Group and Solar Technologies Group will invest Dh112 million in the technology free zone. The facility, expected to open late next year, will be the Middle East’s first facility of its kind, and will generate skilled jobs for over 200 people.

Novaled licences its technology for solar cells to Heliatek

Novaled, a company dedicated to organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) and Heliatek (Dresden, Germany), a company dedicated to organic based photovoltaics, have entered into a licensing agreement concerning the use of Novaled PIN OLED technology for solar cell application. With this agreement, Heliatek will develop high performing organic solar cells using the power efficiency given by the Novaled PIN OLED technologies and molecular dopants. Both ompanies, in addition, will cooperate on further developing organic based photovoltaic technologies.
