Chip giant Intel Corp. unveiled a 10-kilowatt solar installation near its New Mexico manufacturing plant this weekend, launching its latest foray into clean energy for power-hungry data centers. While energy generated by the array’s 64 Sharp solar panels will feed into the local electricity grid and tractor-trailer-sized test racks of computers — rather than directly powering the roughly 5,000 servers at Intel’s facility — the company said it hopes solar can eventually boost the data center’s power supply during times of peak demand. Roseville-based Solar Power Inc. (OTCBB: SOPW) says it has signed a contract with JA Solar Holding Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: JASO) for up to 60 Megawatts of polycrystalline photovoltaic cells.  Solar Power says it needs the cells to meet increased customer demand in Europe, Asia, and for turnkey systems in the United States. The cells will go into SPI’s solar modules.  Based in Hebei, China, JA Solar is one of the world’s largest producers of high-performance solar cells. (more…)

Suntech Power Holdings has crossed the all-important milestone of being able to produce 1 gigawatt of solar panels a year.  The Chinese company celebrated the accomplishment Thursday along with the opening of a new headquarters in the city of Wuxi that comes with 1-megawatt solar panels built into building facade in addition to a host of energy-efficiency features. Suntech makes the solar cells and assembles them into panels.  Reaching 1 gigawatt is certainly worth boasting, although investors will care more about what the company does now that it has that capacity – and how it weathers the economic downturn. LG Electronics (LG), a global leader and technology innovator in consumer electronics, decided at its board of directors meeting held on October 20 to convert its A1 plasma panel-manufacturing line in Gumi, Korea, into solar cell production lines. LG plans to invest KRW 220 billion by 2010 to establish two production lines. The company expects that the first line will be able to begin mass production from the first quarter of 2010, with the second line beginning full operations in the first quarter of 2011. Both lines will manufacture crystalline silicon solar cells and modules with a capacity of 120MW each. (more…)

Sharp Corp. will begin operating its new solar battery plant by the end of this year, earlier than spring 2010 as originally planned, to meet fast-growing demand, company officials said Wednesday.  The ¥72 billion plant is now under construction in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, to produce thin-film solar batteries at an annual pace of 480 megawatts initially, they said. China Sunergy Co., Ltd., a specialized solar cell manufacturer based in Nanjing, held an opening ceremony for the 3rd stage production lines of China Sunergy at its Nanjing production base on December 18. Four high-efficiency SE solar cell production lines were officially put into production. So far, China Sunergy has a production capacity of up to 320 MW, and has ten solar cell production lines: five for high-efficiency SE solar cells, four for HP solar cells (upgraded from common P-type monocrystalline silicon solar cells), and one for common P-type multicrystalline silicon solar cells. (Nasdaq: CSUN), a specialized solar cell manufacturer based in Nanjing, China, today announced that it has entered into a one-year agreement with Ajit Solar Pvt Ltd (“Ajit Solar”), a privately-owned module manufacturer based in Jaipur, India.  Under the terms of the agreement, China Sunergy will supply and deliver a total volume of 12MW of multi-crystalline solar cells. It is expected that China Sunergy will deliver 5MW to Ajit Solar in the first half of the year, and the remaining 7MW in the latter half. (more…)
