Paramount Farms, the world’s largest vertically integrated supplier of pistachios and almonds, today announced the opening of the Paramount Farms’ Solar Plant, a 1.1 mega-watt, $7.5 million solar energy plant in California’s San Joaquin Valley. Spanning eight acres, it is the largest single-site, privately-owned, operating solar plant in the U.S. and is expected to supply about 15 percent of the energy that the company’s nut processing facility uses each year.

In solar, has the race to the bottom begun?
China Sunergy, a solar cell manufacturer out of Nanjing, sold 8.5 million depositary shares (the vehicle foreign companies use to list their stocks in U.S. exchanges) on Nasdaq this week. The stock went out at $11, shot up to about $16, and is now resting between $14 and $15. The rippling in the stock price could partly be reflecting a trend some are worried about in the solar world.

Littleton, Colorado USA–Ascent Solar Technologies, Inc. today announced that it has been selected by the U.S. Air Force to develop a new transparent conductive oxide (TCO) material to serve as the top electrical contact for flexible monolithically integrated thin-film, copper-indium-gallium-selenium (CIGS) solar cells. The Ascent Solar innovation involves developing a new material system that will be deposited using a novel roll-to-roll process. The new process offers the potential for a higher-quality, lower-cost alternative to the TCO materials and deposition methods presently used. The program will be performed under a Small Business Innovative Research contract.

Solar EnerTech’s Production Increases to Meet Demand

Solar EnerTech Corp. (OTCBB: SOEN) (the “Company”) is pleased to announce that during the month of April, it received six new purchase orders from Spain, Malaysia, Turkey and South Africa, as well as from domestic buyers.  The Company is accelerating its manufacturing capacity, to meet this demand by formally launching a two-shift work schedule for its 25Mw solar cell production line. The recent orders consist of 65% foreign buyers and 35% domestic buyers, and the delivery deadlines vary from as early as May through to October. These new orders coupled with existing contracts currently in production, are a major reason behind the Company’s decision to adopt two-shift production scheduling slated to commence right after the Mayday holidays in China.

Unitech Printed Circuit Board (UPCB) Corp. will likely venture into manufacturing of solar cells amid weak demands as a whole for printed circuit boards from handset makers, according to solar-cell equipment suppliers.  UPCB, COMPEQ Manufacturing Corp., WUS Printed Circuit Co., Ltd. and Unimicron Technology Corp. are the world’s top four suppliers of printed circuit boards for mobile phones, commanding a combined half of the world market. Last quarter, lukewarm sales in Motorola adversely affected sales of the four Taiwanese board suppliers. However, UPCB still made NT$1.12 per share after tax thanks to cost-efficient measures.

Amtech Systems, Inc. For the fiscal 2007 year to date, Amtech has received approximately $5.8 million of solar orders, including this most recent order.  The order is a follow-on order from an Asian-based customer and is expected to ship in the fiscal quarter ending September 30, 2007.
