GT Solar Incorporated (“GT Solar“), one of the largest providers of manufacturing equipment and turnkey manufacturing solutions to the photovoltaic (PV) industry, announced the signing of a $56 million contract with Yingli Green Energy Holding Company Limited (NYSE:YGE) (“Yingli“), a leading vertically integrated photovoltaic (PV) product manufacturer in China for the next generation of silicon ingot furnaces – the DSS450 by GT Solar. This is Yingli’s fourth and largest order of GT Solar’s DSS furnaces that grow multi-crystalline ingots up to 450kg, and is expected to bring Yingli’s installed furnace capacity to approximately 600MW in 2009.

SunEdison and the County of Kaua’i (Hawaii) today announced that they have entered into a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) to provide solar energy services at the county’s Līhu‘e Civic Center. SunEdison is North America’s largest solar energy services provider. Under the PPA, SunEdison will finance, install and maintain a 72 kW AC photovoltaic (PV) system on the roof of the Pi‘ikoi Building at the Līhu‘e Civic Center. The power produced by the system will be sold to the county under long-term predictably priced rates less than traditional retail electricity rates.

An Algerian company is planning to build a power cable to Germany to export solar-generated electricity from the Sahara, a state-owned newspaper reported on Wednesday. Tewfik Hasni, chief executive of New Energy Algeria (NEAL), said the 3,000 km (1,875 mile) cable would be laid from the Algerian town of Adrar to the German city of Aachen under a project provisionally entitled “Clean Power From The Desert”, El Moudhaid daily reported. He made the remarks at an Algerian-German business meeting held to coincide with a visit to the north African country this week by German President Horst Koehler, the paper said.

Canadian Solar Inc.
