Ersol Thin Film GmbH, a subsidiary of ersol Solar Energy AG (ersol), and SCHOTT Solar GmbH, Alzenau, have concluded a cooperative agreement under which they will jointly develop micromorphous technology for thin-film solar cells. The two companies will be combining their resources in the area of research and development with the aim of achieving faster product maturity and hence a leading market position in micromorphous solar modules. Global Solar Energy claims solar-cell breakthrough

Amid a major expansion program, Global Solar Energy Inc. (GSE) claims to have achieved a breakthrough for solar cells based on copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) thin-film technology.  GSE (Tucson, Ariz.) said that its CIGS-based, thin-film cells have achieved an average of 10 percent efficiency “on a flexible, lightweight substrate over several production runs.” Starting in 2007, the company’s solar cells achieved an average efficiency of about 9 percent.

Applied Materials, Inc. today announced that it has acquired Baccini S.p.A., a leading supplier of automated metallization and test systems for manufacturing crystalline silicon (c-Si) photovoltaic (PV) cells. Under the terms of the agreement, Applied paid €225 million (or approximately US$334 million) in cash for all of the outstanding shares of Baccini.

German solar cell maker Q-Cells (QCEG.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) is satisfied with last year’s performance and is upbeat about its development in 2008, Q-Cells’ chief executive told German magazine Focus Money in an interview. “I’m very pleased with the way 2007 went, not only in terms of sales and earnings, but also on a technological basis,” Anton Milner was quoted as saying by Focus Money. Solar-cell maker Suniva hauls in $50 million

Atlanta-based Suniva said on Tuesday that it has raised $50 million to commercialize its solar-cell technology, which it says will be as cheap as conventional electricity. Investors are New Enterprise Associations and H.I.G. Ventures, according to the company’s Web site. (more…)

Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd.  one of the world’s leading manufacturers of photovoltaic (PV) cells and modules, today announced Suntech’s participation in a solar-energy system constructed for the roof of the town hall in Genk, Belgium.  The project was engineered by Netherlands-based Oskomera Solar Power Solutions (OSPS) in collaboration with Belgium-based ENECO Energie.  The system consists of approximately 1,260 Suntech solar modules with a capacity of 239kW. Meinl International Power Ltd. (MIP) has signed contracts for the development of a solar farm in Andalusia/Spain. The plants will be constructed in one of Europe´s most Southern and therefore sunniest regions by a consortium headed by Alpine Energie Deutschland GmbH. The solar farm is designed for a total capacity of 15.4 MWp. The general contractor has agreed to complete the project by the end of September 2008 in order to be eligible for a favourable feed-in tariff.

Aleo Solar  AG today announced that it has won another large contract from SOLARTIA. aleo solar will supply the Spanish project developer with modules for a new solar farm in the Navarre province.  This order is expected to generate sales worth nearly EUR 17 million. Together with the orders reported in December, the total agreed volume of the Spanish project now amounts to nearly EUR 62 million. SOLARTIA also has the option of ordering another shipment of modules in 2008 worth nearly EUR 5 million. (more…)

Clean Solar Inc., a solar photovoltaic installer for residential and commercial projects, has announced it will offer a $500 charitable donation on behalf of its customers.  Clean Solar will allow customers to choose the charity of their choice. For those who do not have a favorite charity, Clean Solar will offer four nonprofits to choose from: Sierra Club, Audobon Society, National Wildlife Federation, and The Grameen Foundation.
