Trina Solar Limited (NYSE: TSL – News; “Trina Solar” or the “Company”), a leading integrated manufacturer of solar photovoltaic products from the production of ingots, wafers and cells to the assembly of PV modules, founded in 1997, today announced its decision to discontinue the development of its previously announced 10,000MT polysilicon production facility having a total estimated cost of $1 billion. The Company also announced that its related equipment supply contract with GT Solar Incorporated (“GT Solar”), which was subject to final approval by the Boards of both companies, will lapse as a result, with the concurrence of both parties. CMC Magnetics Initiates Thin-Film Solar Pilot Line With Oerlikon Equipment

Taiwan-based CMC Magnetics Corp. has begun pilot operations on its 40 MWp thin-film solar PV manufacturing line, which was supplied by Oerlikon Solar.  The turnkey 40 MWp production facility is capable of producing approximately 500,000 amorphous silicon thin-film solar modules annually. The equipment covers the entire production process, from glass purification to the testing of finished solar modules. The project scope also includes the implementation of the metrology system for quality control, back-end module production and transparent conductive oxide technology. (more…)

Texas Invests in Thin-film Solar Factory for Austin

The state of Texas will invest $1 million in HelioVolt Corp. of Austin for the construction of a 125,000 square foot manufacturing facility and development space to test and produce the company’s thin-film solar power cells, which convert sunlight into electricity.  The company will manufacture a new type of seamlessly solarized building materials and architectural modules to cover structures with a solar skin. Solar Thin Films, Inc. (OTCBB: SLTN) today announced that it has received an order from Grupo Unisolar, S.A. (“Grupo Unisolar”) to build a 5MW turn-key a-SI Module thin film photovoltaic manufacturing plant. The facility, which will be based in Spain, will be sold to Grupo Unisolar for an aggregate purchase price of $12,300,000. In connection with the sale of the plant, the Company also agreed to provide certain installation and testing services to Grupo Unisolar.
