Japan’s Sharp Corp., fighting to remain the top maker of solar cells, will develop tools to make solar cells with Tokyo Electron Ltd <8035.T> amid growing demand for clean energy.  Sharp, which is building a 100 billion yen ($925 million) factory for thin-film solar cells, and rivals such as Germany’s Q-Cells are vying to boost the production capacity of solar cells as silicon supplies tighten.

Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd. (NYSE: STP) one of the world’s leading manufacturers of photovoltaic (PV) cells and modules, today announced Suntech’s participation in a solar-energy system constructed for the roof of the town hall in Genk, Belgium.  The project was engineered by Netherlands-based Oskomera Solar Power Solutions (OSPS) in collaboration with Belgium-based ENECO Energie.  The system consists of approximately 1,260 Suntech solar modules with a capacity of 239kW. BARBADOS’ largest solar energy provider, Solar Dynamics Ltd., is firmly behind the decision by Government to promote the use of renewable energy. Minister of Energy and the Environment, Elizabeth Thompson, recently unveiled the draft Barbados National Energy Policy, which seeks to preserve this country’s environment by focusing on reducing the dependence on fossil fuels and facilitating the creation of a renewable energy society and economy. Specifically, the document outlines the target of generating 25 per cent of national energy through renewable energy by 2026. This goal will be achieved in part by allowing independent power producers, utilising renewable energy technology, to sell electricity to the national grid, Thompson said.
