EMCORE Corporation, a leading provider of semiconductor-based components and subsystems for the broadband, fiber-optic, satellite and terrestrial solar power markets, announced today that it entered into two new supply agreements for solar cells and receivers with a total value of over $40 million. The larger of the two purchase contracts is a multi-year supply agreement for solar cells, to be delivered over four years. The product to be delivered will be incorporated into concentrating photovoltaics (CPV) systems developed for commercial rooftop installations as well as utility-scale solar farms. The customers placing these orders are targeting CPV deployments in the United States with a particular focus on the California market. Production for these orders has commenced and approximately $1 million of product is expected to be shipped in the present quarter. The award of these purchase agreements affirms EMCORE’s position as the leading supplier of the enabling CPV engine, and further diversifies our terrestrial CPV component backlog. (more…)

China solar firm Shunda aims for $1 bln IPO in New York

China’s Jiangsu Shunda Group, which makes silicon wafers used in solar power cells, aims to raise $1 billion from a share listing in New York during the first half of next year to fund rapid expansion, its president said on Monday. It plans to invest 1.2 billion yuan ($175 million) in a second polysilicon plant with annual production capacity of 3,500 tonnes, aiming to launch output in June 2009, Ni Yunda told Reuters in a telephone interview. German solar module maker Solon AG has signed a $500 million supply contract with U.S. solar cell maker Suniva Inc, the companies said on Wednesday. The deal, which runs until 2012, is the first customer announcement by privately held Suniva.  In an interview, Suniva Chief Executive John Baumstark said the deal would allow the two companies to collaborate on driving down the cost of solar power, while improving the efficiency of generating electricity from the sun’s rays. Wal-Mart, Inc. (NYSE:WMT) and BP Solar today announced the completion of a 591.6 kilowatt (kW) solar power system at the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Chino, California. The system consists of over 3,400 modules and will provide approximately 18 percent of the store’s electricity.  This store is part of Wal-Mart’s major purchase of solar power from BP Solar and other solar power providers for approximately 22 Wal-Mart stores, Sam’s Clubs and distribution centers in Hawaii and California. The stores included in the projects are expected to achieve immediate savings over their current utility rates upon day one of operation. (more…)

BP Solar to Install One of the Largest Solar Electric Power Systems for a U.S. Educational Facility in Colorado

Colorado State University-Pueblo soon will be the home of a solar electric system in excess of one megawatt, one of the largest such systems for an education facility in the United States. Under this innovative arrangement with Black Hills Energy (formerly Aquila) and BP Solar, the system is estimated to contribute more than 10 percent of the University’s electricity needs. Installation of the ground- based solar array will begin in July with full operation scheduled for late this fall. (more…)

Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced it will design and install the core process and safety systems for a new plant under construction by Hoku Materials, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hoku Scientific, Inc. that is planned to produce polysilicon, a key material needed to produce solar panels. The solar power market is currently estimated to be a $10 billion business, with realistic potential to expand to $30 billion by 2010. The Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF) today announced that four of the solar photovoltaic (PV) projects that it funded through its On-Site Renewable Distributed Generation Program are now completed and successfully operating.  These installations include:
* An 11.5-kilowatt rooftop solar PV system at Middlebury Animal Hospital in Middlebury, Conn.;
* A 23.2-kilowatt ground-mounted solar PV system at Tyrone Farm in Pomfret, Conn.;
* A 3.7-kilowatt rooftop solar PV system at Westport Wash & Wax in Westport, Conn.; and
* A 16.3-kilowatt building-integrated solar PV system at 2001 Company of Waterbury, Conn.
