Consumers could be mixing margaritas at the beach this summer by plugging their blenders into boom-box-size solar-powered battery packs.   Hitting the shelves this spring is the XPower Powerpack Solar, a 10-amp battery with a 5-watt solar panel. Unlike smaller solar chargers meant to top off mobile phones and other gadgets, the $169 XPower packs enough juice to run larger consumer electronics: It can run a laptop for three hours and a TV for 45 minutes.

A housing estate run on solar power in Calcutta, India

A housing estate “fully powered by solar energy”, a first in the country, is coming up in New Town, Rajarhat.   Work on Rabi Rashmi, being developed by the West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency (WBREDA), started in February last year and is likely to be ready by November.

Solar power should become a mainstream energy choice in three or four years, according to a report by an environmental research group.  In the UAE, the use of commercial solar energy is slowly growing. According to a UAE Interact news report, renewable energy experts have been promoting the construction of solar housing in the Emirates. The houses would be fully powered by solar energy.

The U.S. Department of Energy has released $22.7 million for basic research projects aimed at improving the capture, conversion and use of solar energy.  Officials said the research involving 27 projects at 23 universities and national laboratories will help increase the amount of solar power in the nation’s energy supply.

Littleton, Colorado USA–Ascent Solar Technologies, Inc. today announced that it has been selected by the U.S. Air Force to develop a new transparent conductive oxide (TCO) material to serve as the top electrical contact for flexible monolithically integrated thin-film, copper-indium-gallium-selenium (CIGS) solar cells. The Ascent Solar innovation involves developing a new material system that will be deposited using a novel roll-to-roll process. The new process offers the potential for a higher-quality, lower-cost alternative to the TCO materials and deposition methods presently used. The program will be performed under a Small Business Innovative Research contract.

Solar EnerTech’s Production Increases to Meet Demand

Solar EnerTech Corp. (OTCBB: SOEN) (the “Company”) is pleased to announce that during the month of April, it received six new purchase orders from Spain, Malaysia, Turkey and South Africa, as well as from domestic buyers.  The Company is accelerating its manufacturing capacity, to meet this demand by formally launching a two-shift work schedule for its 25Mw solar cell production line. The recent orders consist of 65% foreign buyers and 35% domestic buyers, and the delivery deadlines vary from as early as May through to October. These new orders coupled with existing contracts currently in production, are a major reason behind the Company’s decision to adopt two-shift production scheduling slated to commence right after the Mayday holidays in China.

Solar EnerTech Corp. The shipment is part of the Fan Qie Trading, Ltd. sales order that the Company announced earlier this year. The container is being shipped to the Port of Capetown for delivery to one of Africa’s largest solar system integrators. Fan Qui Trading has advised Solar EnerTech that the integrator brings 13 years of experience at successfully installing solar PV systems in remote rural areas throughout the continent.

Slovenia builds solar power plant on the highway

Our western neighbours will soon build the first solar power plant with collectors next to the highway.
Putting solar collectors on noise isolating fences next to highways in. Europe is nothing new and now Slovenia has one such first project, it was reported on May 15.  As Ljubljana newspaper Delo reported on May 14, the noise isolating fence that will be built on the fast road next to the border crossing Vrtojba, 640 metres long and two and a half metres high, will have solar cells, and the power of the solar power plant, plugged into an electric network, will be 80 kw.
