Lowell solar technologies developer Konarka Technologies Inc. has entered into a development agreement with Tokyo-based Toppan Forms Co. Ltd., a maker of printable electronics and digital information technologies, according to Konarka executives. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
The deal includes the development, manufacturing and commercialization of polymer-based organic photovoltaic (OPV) technologies for consumer and electronic applications. The technologies will be based on Konarka’s Power Plastic, a film-based material that converts light to energy. Toppan, which reported more than $13 billion in sales in 2006, specializes in printing of all kinds, including checks, passports, circuit boards, and color filters for LCDs.
Konarka, which has a European headquarters in Nuremberg, Germany, and a research and development facility in Austria, recently promoted COO Rick Hess to the position of CEO, while former chief executive and co-founder Howard Berke moved to the new position of executive chairman of the board.
