North Carolina-based SPX Corp. signed a $40 million contract to supply solar equipment to Norway’s NorSun AS. SPX’s Kayex business will design and manufacture crystal-growing equipment for NorSun’s production mono crystalline ingots and wafers. Shipment of equipment is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2007.

Kayex makes the base material for producing solar cells by growing polysilicon into crystal ingots. The New York-based operation has its crystal-growing technology at solar and semiconductor facilities around the world. The crystal-growing machines will be installed in NorSun’s new solar wafer facility in Ardal, Norway.

“SPX is focused on helping to build global infrastructure,” John Way, a division president of SPX, said in a company statement. “The growth in the solar energy market allows SPX additional opportunities to provide energy solutions for our customers. We are pleased to help NorSun become a significant manufacturer of solar materials by using our expertise and technology.”

NorSun officials say the contract was awarded in an effort to respond to the growing silicon-based solar energy market. Once fully operational the facility is expected to be among the largest of its kind in the world.
