Together with a consortium of Deutsche Bank AG, the Spanish ecoEnergias and Solarparc AG the SolarWorld Group created a 30 Megawatt (MW) solar park in the Autonomous Community of Extremadura in the Southwest of Spain. The solar power plant located in the vicinity of the two towns of Mérida and Don Alvaro possesses a double axis tracking system to track the sun which makes it one of the largest solar projects of its kind internationally.
SolarWorld AG supplied major parts of the solar power system and was also involved in the planning of the climate-friendly power plant that could be completed in six months. Thanks to early registration by the Spanish partne the solar park will receive a state-guaranteed feed-in compensation of initially around 43 cents per kWh. This rate will be paid for the duration of 25 years subject to an annual adjustment to the Spanish consumer price index. The initiators are planning to place the Spanish solar park as a financial product with interested investors. Within the consortium the SolarWorld AG subsidiary Solarparc AG has the marketing rights for a total o 10 MW.
On 3 October 2008 the inauguration ceremony for the solar quality power plant will take place in which not only the President of the Autonomous Community of Extremaduras, Guillermo Fernandez Vara, but also the Chairman and CEO of SolarWorld AG, Dipl.-Ing. Frank H. Asbeck, will take part. ‘Quality and efficiency are for us the crucial parameters by which to promote the competitiveness of climate-friendly solar power’, says the head
of SolarWorld. ‘This applies to both decentralized roof top systems and to high capacity green field power stations like the one in Extremadura.’
‘For investors we are offering an attractive and sustainable investment product with our first Spanish solar park which thanks to its high quality and lucrative feed-in compensation will make for strong returns on investment’, says Susanne Asbeck-Muffler, the CFO of Solarparc AG. Thanks to the excellent solar radiation conditions in the sun-drenched region along the border to Portugal the solar park will generate some 57 million kilowatt hours of climate-friendly electricity – enough to completely meet the needs of more than 16,000 Spanish households. At the same time it helps to avoid 38,500 tons of CO2 emissions per year.
