The Norwegian solar energy adventure continues, with Renewable Energy Corporation (REC) announcing heavy investment in their facility in Telemark.
REC said that they would be doubling their production capacity of silicon wafers, needed to manufacture solar cell panels, at their Herøya facility in Telemark County in southern Norway. The investment will make Herøya the world’s undisputed largest facility for this type of production and will require a total expenditure of NOK 2.5 billion (USD 407 million). The two new additions to the existing plant will begin operation in Q4 2008 and Q2 2009.
REC estimates annual sales income from Herøya will be between NOK 5-6 billion, according to a bulletin released to the Oslo stock exchange on Wednesday morning.
