Head of the project Ankur Sharma claimed that the car is India’s first solar car and runs completely on solar energy. He said that the basic motivation for the project comes from the depleting conventional energy resources. The Indian Solar Car and Fuel Cell Car Projects wing of the Delhi College of Engineering has designed and developed a solar photo voltaic driven car.
Head of the project Ankur Sharma claimed that the car is India’s first solar car and runs completely on solar energy. He said that the basic motivation for the project comes from the depleting conventional energy resources. ”It is the right time for us to shift to renewable sources of energy and decrease dependence on the conventional sources,” Sharma said.
Of the total project cost of about 30 lacs, the fabrication cost of Rs. 13.82 has been sponsored by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India. The team also received financial/kind support from DCE, J K Tyres and IRFC.
Giving details about the car, Sharma said the car uses 672 Watts solar panel specially manufactured for the car by CEL and the driving DC motor use the battery bank of 48 V , 84 AH which will be charged by the solar panels continuously during the test run. The car also consists of the regenerative breaking in which about 5% of the braking loss will be used to charge the battery system.
