A SOLAR panel will be put on the roof of a primary school in the latest bid to cut carbon emissions. The council’s Climate Change Fund has secured just over £10,000 for the renewable energy project which will be part of a new classroom block at the Grafton Primary School in Holloway. It is one of four environmentally friendly installations at schools and community centres across the borough.
The others, which have been financed by the fund at a cost of £250,000, are solar-panel installations at the North Islington Nursery School in Finsbury Park and at the Factory Children’s Centre in Newington Green. A ground-source pump will provide a source of heating to the Mayville Community Centre, Newington Green.
To be eligible for the money, the schools and community centres had to demonstrate that they had significant carbon-saving potential. Councillor Lucy Watt, executive member for the environment said: “I am especially pleased that we are going to be funding more projects in schools and community centres. The money will be helping to educate people and raise awareness among children and other local users of the buildings.
Teaching young people about the need to reduce our impact on the environment from an early age is vital to creating a more sustainable world.
“Making this a greener borough is at the heart of the Liberal Democrat vision for Islington so I’m pleased that the Climate Change Fund is being used to finance another round of projects.” Planning permission has already been granted for the Grafton School Project and work is due to start at the end of this month.
