Although Austin Energy is falling behind its goal to expand the supply of solar energy in Austin, the city-owned utility company is pursuing new plans that would create a massive facility in West Texas and significantly increase the city’s alternative energy capacity. Austin Energy announced in 2003 a plan to have 20 percent of its electricity come from renewable sources by the year 2020. Solar energy was a significant part of this plan, with the goal of creating the capacity for a 100-megawatt threshold in 2020 and the intermediate goal of 15 megawatts in 2007.

Taiwan Power Co., the island’s biggest electricity generator, plans to spend NT$3.57 billion installing solar panels as the government aims to reduce dependency on energy imports. The project, pending approval by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, will increase the state-run utility’s capacity by 10 megawatts, or 71 times, by 2011, Yu Shang-hsiung, Taipower’s development director, said by phone yesterday. Taipower’s solar power capacity is currently 140 kilowatts, according to Yu. (more…)

Solar Power Partners introduces SPP LLC2 a Hawaiian Solar Energy Fund

Solar Power Partners, Inc. (SPP), a developer, owner and manager (DOM) of a distributed network of commercial solar energy facilities (SEF), today formally initiated its Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) program for commercial buildings in Hawaii. This announcement coincides with the establishment of SPP LLC2, a renewable energy fund for investing in Hawaiian commercial solar energy facilities.  Up-front capital costs for commercial solar energy facilities have been the primary barrier for building owners to purchase or even lease solar energy systems. SPP’s Power Purchase Agreement allows building owners to access solar energy without having to invest their own capital. The maintenance and operating costs are covered while building owners pay only for the electricity that is consumed.  Moreover, the PPA ensures energy rates remain lower than the local utility and insulate the user from volatile energy prices over the term of the agreement. Since 1999 typical commercial Hawaiian energy rates have increased over 60%.

People living on the island of Apolima in Samoa are now getting electricity 24 hours a day from solar power. Over past years the fewer than 200 people on the island have received electricity for only 4 to 5 hours a day because of the high cost of running the island’s diesel power generator.

Prime Minister Tuila’epa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi says it’s a challenge now for the world to seek other ways to generate power as of one day oil could run out. The government’s power authority is looking at the possible use of wind mills to produce electricity for the whole country Radio New Zealand International is reporting.

Chandigarh, January 18: In a first-of-its kind experiment in the city, the UT Engineering Department has utilised solar power for the traffic light points. Among the first are the Sector 27-28 traffic lights, which have been made operational by using solar energy. Talking to Newsline, UT Superindenting Engineer (Electrical) Surinder Pal said as per the broader plan, while several streetlight points have been made functional by solar power, the viability of using the same for the traffic lights is also under consideration.

“We are constantly identifying various places where the use of solar power is viable. The installation cost of this energy is very high, so it has to be seen that the solar power is feasible and economically viable,” said the SE. The plans of using solar power for lighting some points at the Rose Garden, Sector 16, and other parks in the city are also on, said the department officials.
