Maputo, Mozambique, 25 Jan – The Mozambican Energy Fund (Funae) plans to install 2,500 solar power systems before the end of June in the provinces of Inhambane and Sofala, the chairman of the Fund, Miquelina Menezes said Tuesday in Maputo. For this rural electrification project using renewable energy sources, which includes placing solar systems in 300 schools and a similar number of health centers, the World Bank will contribute US$2 million.

Menezes said that Mozambique’s capacity to take advantage of solar power was much greater than that of some countries that had successfully implemented similar projects. “We have many days of sunshine, we have rivers, we have biomass, we have all the conditions in terms of renewable energy to successfully implement the rural electrification program,” she said.

Menezes exemplified the benefits of introducing electrical power to rural areas by mentioning the launch of night courses in schools and small medical operations that require electricity carried out without patients travelling to district or provincial hospitals. (macauhub)
