Council Chooses WorldWater to Build Largest Municipal Solar Installation in New Jersey

WorldWater & Solar Technologies Corp., developer and marketer of proprietary high-power solar systems, today announced that the City Council of Ocean City, NJ has awarded the Company a contract to build a $4 million solar system for the City which is expected to produce nearly 550,000 kilowatt hours of energy in its first year. The Ocean City Municipal Solar Energy Power Project will include roof mounts on the Cultural Arts and Community Center, the new Public Works Complex building, the Vehicle Maintenance Center and the Sports and Civic Center. Solar Setback in San Francisco

A pilot program that would have heated San Francisco’s solar market with $3 million in incentives — and become the largest such program in the nation — has been put on hold because of budget concerns. Sun Run president says uncertainty could make the city less attractive to solar companies.

San Francisco’s solar incentive pilot program, expected to be the largest such municipal program in the country, has been put on hold.  Until this week, the program was slated to begin Monday. It would have set aside $3 million in rebates intended to bring 1.5 megawatts of solar installations to the city by offering between $3,000 and $4,000 for residential installations and up to $10,000 for commercial installations. U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Samuel W. Bodman today announced that DOE will make available up to $2.4 million to 12 cities across the country selected as Solar America Cities, chosen for their commitment and comprehensive approach to the deployment of solar technologies and the development of sustainable solar infrastructures.  These projects further President Bush’s Solar America Initiative (SAI), which aims to make electricity from solar photovoltaics cost-competitive with conventional electricity by 2015.  Combined with industry cost share and funding from each city, total investment in all 12 cities is estimated at $12.1 million.  Secretary Bodman made the announcement while delivering keynote remarks at the New Frontiers in Energy Summit 2008 in Denver. The U.S. Air Force says it has selected Colorado-based Ascent Solar Technologies Inc. to develop highly efficient solar cell technology. Ascent Solar, a designer of thin-film photovoltaic modules for solar cells, has received a phase II contract from the Air Force to research a way to achieve a 20 percent efficiency rate in flexible thin-film tandem solar cells. The Air Force Small Business Innovative Research initiative under the Office of the Secretary of Defense announced the deal potentially worth approximately $750,000. (more…)

Concentrix claims the use of concentrator technology means cells achieve twice the efficiency when compared with conventional photovoltaics and gives cost savings of 10 to 20% for electric power production, depending on the location. Sunovia Energy Technologies Inc of Sarasota, FL, USA and infrared sensor and imaging firm EPIR Technologies Inc of Bolingbrook, IL, USA say that they are collaborating with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETH Zurich) on the further development of cadmium telluride (CdTe) solar cells.  The collaboration provides the firms with key experience and knowledge related to solar cell development and manufacturing, and should expedite product development efforts, specifically involving the development of CdTe thin-film solar cells including the use of flexible plastic substrates.
