ROADSIDE solar panels along the hard shoulder of the M4 could be used to power homes and businesses in GreenPark.  And the existing landmark wind turbine, which dominates the south Reading skyline and powers 1,500 homes, could be sharing its workload with two smaller windmills.  Developer PRUPIM announced its vision for green energy at the opening of the GreenPark Turbine visitor centre last week.  The company is looking into utilising the unused verges of the M4 near junction 11, by siting long solar panels along the embankment.

Prime Minister John Howard has hinted the federal budget may include an increase in the rebate given to Australians who install solar power panels on their properties.  The rebate, designed to offset the $10,000 to $15,000 cost of installation, was introduced six years ago.

“We are going to maintain that scheme, the treasurer’s announced that,” Mr Howard said when asked on Southern Cross Radio when the government would increase the rebate on domestic solar panels.  “I think it is always a good idea to keep an ear to the radio, particularly 3AW, and you may get some further information.”  Treasurer Peter Costello said in October that the $4,000 rebate for households who install solar power panels was not under threat.  Mr Costello will hand down his 2007-08 budget on May 8.

PRESIDENT A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has plans to light up Rashtrapati Bhawan with solar power. To avoid cutting down about 15-20 trees in the compound, the project would require the construction of a new structure on which the solar panels will be mounted.  All this will cost about Rs 350 crore.  The proposed structure — which will double up as a convention centre — would be bigger than Vigyan Bhawan..
