Nanowin Technology, a newcomer to the solar cell industry, yesterday broke ground for a thin-film solar cell plant at the Tainan Science Park (TSP) in southern Taiwan, with equipment installation scheduled for October 2007 and volume production for the first-quarter of 2008.  Nanowin vice president Ping-hsiung Huang said the company expects to increase its capital to NT$1.1 billion (US$33.1 million) in May from the present NT$200 million, with most of the increased capital going to the thin-film solar cell business.

Huang said by the end of 2007, the new plant will have installed equipment for an annual capacity of 5.5 megawatt-peak (MWp), with total capacity ramping up to 35MWp in 2008. For 2007 and 2008, it will focus on amorphous silicon (a-Si) thin-film solar cells, but in 2009 it will also venture into micro-crystalline solar cells, Huang said, adding the company expects its total capacity to ramp up to 150MWp in 2011.

Nanowin was established in 2003 focusing in the research, development, and marketing of surface treatment of molds and surface coating technology. It started to develop thin-film solar cells last year.
