The San Francisco Giants and Pacific Gas and Electric Company today announced the completion of the solar energy system installation at AT&T Park. The panels at AT&T Park, the first ballpark in Major League Baseball (MLB) with a solar system, now provide up to 122 kilowatts of renewable energy for PG&E’s customers in San Francisco and throughout its service area.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company announced today it has entered into agreements with two developers of utility-scale photovoltaic solar power: Cleantech America LLC and GreenVolts, Inc. The agreements will deliver up to seven megawatts (MW) of utility-scale renewable solar energy for PG&E’s customers throughout Northern and Central California.

Japanese automobile manufacturer Nissan Motor Co. will install 606 solar panels at its Barcelona vehicle plant by the end of this summer. The new initiative complements other programs either already in place at or planned for other Nissan facilities, including six wind turbines at its UK-based Sunderland plant and 732 panels slated for installation this summer at its light commercial vehicle plant in Avila, Spain.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame has inaugurated Africa’s biggest solar energy plant.  The facility, which is installed at Jali hill in Gasabo District, was funded by the German state through a company called Stadtwerke Mainz and Rhineland-Palatinate citizens, the New Times in Kigali reported.  At the launch of the facility, Kagame said there would not have been a better way to mark 25 years of cooperation between Rwanda and Germany.

Rwanda yesterday unveiled a 250-kilowatt solar plant which ups the nation’s ‘leccy-producing capacity to 50 megawatts, Reuters reports.  The German-backed project, said to be the largest in Africa, makes a modest contribution to the 100 megawatts the country needs “to meet soaring demand that has triggered regular blackouts”. Rwanda’s hydroelectric plants have struggled to cope, and many businesses get their juice from diesel generators.

St. Louis Park, Minn., is installing a Wi-Fi network powered with the use of solar technology. The city said it is installing a 400 access-point solar-powered Wi-Fi network, called ParkWiFi. The network is designed to provide wireless Internet coverage across all 10 square miles of the city, a suburb of Minneapolis with 44,000 residents, according to the city and Arinc Inc., the Annapolis, Md.-based contractor on the project, Computerworld reported.
