Reducing greenhouse gas emissions may be no easy task, but expect Boulder County to be doing its fair share in the upcoming year. The vision for the future: to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 7 percent below 1990 levels by 2012 – with Boulder County just one of the 360 U.S. cities representing more than 55.5 million Americans who pledged to dramatically reduce their greenhouse gas emissions this year.

Damien Hirst is breathing fresh life into the renewable energy industry by ordering the country’s second largest solar power system. Hirst is to spend up to £1.5m on a 310kw solar power system for his studio buildings in Stroud, Gloucestershire. Only the Cooperative Insurance Society Tower in Manchester has a bigger system. Hirst’s solar panels will generate enough electricity to power up to 150 homes, and it is not clear whether it will feed into the national grid.

Buying an environmentally friendly home once came with a unfriendly financial burden, but a new neighborhood planned for Natomas breaks the green barrier in both respects by introducing all-solar, sustainable homes priced within reach of most first-time home buyers.  Built by D.R. Horton, Provence will showcase how sustainable homes can also be attainable homes. The community will eventually build out to 187 homes offered in three different floor plans constructed with the latest solar and energy saving technology. D.R. Horton will also qualify as the first Sacramento-area production home builder to qualify for silver certification granted by LEED — the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design initiative by the U.S. Green Building Council.

SunPower Corp. (Nasdaq: SPWR), a Silicon Valley-based manufacturer of high-efficiency solar cells, solar panels and solar systems, today announced that its Spanish subsidiary will engineer, procure equipment for and construct three solar electric power plants totaling approximately 21-megawatts in the Castilla La Mancha region of Spain.  Corporate affiliates of The Naturener Group, a Spanish-based company, will own the three solar power plants located in Tinajeros (Albacete), Manzanares and Almuradiel (Ciudad Real), just southeast of Madrid. They are expected to be financed by a Spanish bank syndicate.

Singapore’s first zero-energy building (powered by solar panels) to be ready in 2009

SINGAPORE : Singapore will construct its first zero-energy building (ZEB) at Braddell Road to promote green technology.  S$10 million will be spent to retrofit an existing facility to incorporate some of the latest energy-efficient inventions.  It’s being hailed as the Building and Construction Authority’s (BCA) flagship R&D project under its Green Building Masterplan. The building is able to generate as much electricity as it consumes through renewable energy. This works out to a net energy consumption of zero over a typical year. The BCA said the 3,000-sq metre building is expected to be 60 percent more energy efficient than conventional buildings. (more…)

A SOLAR panel will be put on the roof of a primary school in the latest bid to cut carbon emissions. The council’s Climate Change Fund has secured just over £10,000 for the renewable energy project which will be part of a new classroom block at the Grafton Primary School in Holloway. It is one of four environmentally friendly installations at schools and community centres across the borough. (more…)

RENEWABLE-ENERGY company Dulas has secured a major new order from Ghana’s health ministry for its solar-powered vaccine fridges.  The deal for the Machynlleth- based firm comes after promoting its vaccine fridge at the MedicAfrica exhibition in Lusaka, Zambia, two years ago.

One of these fridges was presented to the Zambian Government as a gift from the Welsh Assembly Government at the trade show and Dulas representatives also delivered a letter to Zambia’s President Mwanawasa from First Minister Rhodri Morgan.

Safeway stores up solar power

Safeway Inc. (NYSE: SWY), already California’s largest commercial consumer of renewable energy, recently took steps to solidify its lead by switching the first of 23 planned stores over to solar power in early September 2007.   The 55,000-square-foot Dublin store now has 1,000 roof-top solar panels, which the company says will generate 7,500 megawatt hours of electricity per year. Safeway also buys wind energy to power its retail gas stations, and the company joined the Chicago Climate Exchange in 2006 with a pledge to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 390,000 tons below 2000 levels.

Gov. Jon S. Corzine said Tuesday that other businesses  should follow the lead of a construction company which has been cited for its innovations
in using clean energy and energy efficiency technology.  The governor toured the headquarters of Ferreira Construction, where management has
