Common Ground High School of New Haven today hosted the launch of a solar energy curriculum program for teachers. Designed by the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF), Learning for Clean Energy Innovation (LCEI) will focus initially on solar energy education and will later be expanded to cover fuel cell and wind energy. LCEI professional development sessions will incorporate a specially designed curriculum aligned with the Connecticut Department of Education’s Science Frameworks, and will be offered to 9th-grade teachers from the 61 towns in the state who are participating in the 20% by 2010 Campaign.

$1,180,000 Grant from Connecticut Clean Energy Fund Approved for Solar PV Installation in Westbrook, Conn.

The Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF) Board today announced approval of a $1,180,000 grant to defray approximately half of the total cost of a 308-kilowatt DC solar photovoltaic (PV) system at The Lee Company’s Westbrook, Conn., Restrictor Group production facility. Upon completion, this system will be the largest solar photovoltaic system at a manufacturing facility in the state of Connecticut.

Today the U.S. Air Force celebrates the completion of North America’s largest solar photovoltaic system at Nellis Air Force Base. A joint project of the U.S. Air Force, MMA Renewable Ventures, LLC, a subsidiary of Municipal Mortgage & Equity, LLC (NYSE: MMA), SunPower Corporation (Nasdaq: SPWR), and Nevada Power Company, the 14 megawatt Nellis solar energy system will generate more than 30 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean electricity annually and supply approximately 25 percent of the total power used at the base, where 12,000 people live and work.

Home solar installations tripled in 2007 -Mountain View tops large Bay Area cities in watts per capita

It’s been a blazing year for solar power in Mountain View, with residential solar installations tripling from 84 at the start of the year to 247 as of Dec. 12, according to the California Solar Initiative.  The number of residential solar installations for 2007 is larger than for any other city in the state, except San Jose and San Diego. The boom is in large part due to the efforts of a local solar buyers group, which earlier this year organized the bulk purchase of solar arrays for 118 homes. (more…)

Delhi College of Engg. comes up with a car that runs completely on solar energy

Head of the project Ankur Sharma claimed that the car is India’s first solar car and runs completely on solar energy. He said that the basic motivation for the project comes from the depleting conventional energy resources.  The Indian Solar Car and Fuel Cell Car Projects wing of  the Delhi College of Engineering has designed and developed a solar photo voltaic driven car.

Dipal Barua from Bangladesh and Christopher Weeramantry from Sri Lanka were among the peace and environment activists from four countries honoured with the annual ‘Alternate Nobel prize’.  The Right Livelihood awards were given to the activists Friday for their contribution in the fields of renewable energy, peace and fare market practices.

Bangladesh’s top mobile phone operator Grameenphone Ltd., majority owned by Norway’s Telenor (TEL.OL: Quote, Profile, Research), has installed two hybrid solar-powered base stations in the country.  The two sites, set up on an experimental basis, at Habiganj in the country’s northeast, are designed to discharge power for three consecutive days without any sunlight to recharge them, it said in a statement. Mitsubishi Electric & Electronics USA, Inc. has been selected to provide photovoltaic (PV) panels for the San Francisco Food Bank’s 55,000 sq.-ft. warehouse. Florida Power & Light and NASA working on solar installation at Kennedy Space Center

Florida Power & Light Co. said today it is working with NASA to put solar panels at the Kennedy Space Center as early as next year.  FPL said the project would produce 10 megawatts of power, which would serve about 3,000 homes.  FPL and NASA have signed a five-year memorandum of understanding to study whether it’s feasible to have the photovoltaic solar array, which would be on a 50-acre plot. The agreement also includes options for other renewable-energy projects, including biomass and wind power.
