Akeena Solar Inc. has announced an increase in its line of credit with Comerica Bank.  Akeena is a designer and installer of solar power systems and is one of the largest national integrators of residential and small commercial solar power systems in the United States.  The announcement states Comerica has increased Akeena’s accounts receivable and inventory-based line of credit from $2.0 million to $7.5 million.

Performers celebrate solar power in New Mexico

Singer-songwriter and environmental activist Tracy Lyons will perform at the 9th annual Taos Solar Music Festival.  Lyons’ announcement completes the list of performers that also includes diverse artists like Los Lobos, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Ottmar Liebert and Big Head Todd and the Monsters among others.

The Taos Solar Music Festival takes place from Friday, June 29, through July 1. The Festival was designed to bring people together for music, interactive alternative energy displays and other solar technology features in downtown Taos.

Solar power for far-flung areas (of Philippines) gets boost

Solar Electric Company Inc. (Solarco) and microfinance firm Taytay sa Kauswagan Inc. (TSKI) yesterday signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the strengthening of solar electric systems in far flung areas of the country which are not reached by commercial power providers.  The partnership is supported by independent power provider Mirant Philippines and endorsed by the Department of Energy (DOE).

Long Island’s 1,000th Solar Power System Installed

The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) dedicated the installation of Long Island’s 1,000th solar roof Tuesday to Hicksville homeowners George and Angela Karman. The 9,180 watt PV system is expected to produce 10,384 kilowatt hours (kWhs) annually, which should save the Karman’s approximately $2,100 per year.

Solar power may bring new jobs to Texas

A study says increased used of solar power could bring 123,000 new jobs to Texas during the next few decades.  The report by the IC2 Institute at the University of Texas at Austin said the creation of a vibrant solar power industry could stimulate the state’s economy, reduce the cost of power for consumers and minimize green-house gas emissions, the university said Friday in a news release.

Colorado’s two largest utilities have agreed to explore the development of a major solar-energy power plant in New Mexico.  Xcel Energy and Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association will join several other power companies and the Electric Power Research Institute to study what could become one of the nation’s largest plants using solar heat to make electricity.

Applied Materials (AMAT – Cramer’s Take – Stockpickr – Rating) moved deeper into the solar energy market Tuesday with its $475 million acquisition of HCT Shaping Systems.  The all-cash deal fleshes out Applied Material’s portfolio of equipment for manufacturing photovoltaic solar cell wafers, supplementing its traditional business providing semiconductor and flat-panel display manufacturing tools.  In a conference call with analysts after Tuesday’s market close, Applied Materials executives said the acquisition adds to the momentum the company is experiencing in the solar energy market.

Mismanagement threatens ambitious solar power project of Senegal

Poor planning, maintenance and technical support are amongst the factors threatening to undermine an ambitious effort to electrify Senegal’s remote Sine Saloum Delta using solar energy.  Another major problem is people’s lack of willingness or ability to pay the fees for the photovoltaic systems.
