A 30-kilowatt solar photovoltaic (PV) system was switched on late last week at Delta Products’ office in Research Triangle Park (RTP). Comprised of 160 solar panels, the array is the largest corporate-owned, roof-mounted solar PV system in the state. On average, it will produce about 36,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity each year – enough to power 3 to 4 typical NC homes and offset approximately 37 tons of carbon dioxide annually.

Affordable Solar – San Francisco’s Solar Task Force

In order to make solar panels more affordable, San Francisco’s Solar Task Force has proposed the largest solar financing program in the nation. The program, along with state and federal rebates, would cut the cost of solar panels in half.  “San Francisco is a national leader in the development of renewable energy on city buildings,” said Mayor Gavin Newsom. “Providing incentives and loans directly to consumers makes it both easy and cost-effective for residents and businesses to go solar.”

Solar panels to go in 30% of houses in Japan by 2030

The government will aim for 30 percent of all households to have solar panels installed by 2030 as part of its efforts to fight global warming, officials said.  Under the target, the number of solar-powered households would increase to 14 million from the current 400,000, and the capacity of such generation would expand 30-fold from the current 1.3 million kilowatts, the officials said. SunPower Corp. GE Energy Financial Services, a unit of GE (NYSE: GE), announced today that it is partnering with SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ: SPWR) — a Silicon Valley-based manufacturer of high-efficiency solar cells, solar panels, and solar systems — to provide financing for five California solar power projects. The projects, totaling approximately eight megawatts, include a system for Toyota Motor Sales’ Parts Center that will be the largest single-roof solar power installation in the United States. The companies are also collaborating on solar projects for HP, Agilent and two county and regional agencies.

Solar Integrated Technologies, Inc. (AIM:SIT.LN), a leading provider of building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) roofing systems, announced today that it has won an order for U.S. $4.3 million to supply BIPV roofing systems to be installed on a new industrial complex in Girona, Spain.  The project, named “SOL DE CELRÀ” and believed to be the largest thin film BIPV project in Spain, will be owned by a group of local companies.  The general contractor for the project is Master Renovables, the Spanish engineering firm and solar integrator.  The project is expected to be completed in 2008.

Common Ground High School of New Haven today hosted the launch of a solar energy curriculum program for teachers. Designed by the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF), Learning for Clean Energy Innovation (LCEI) will focus initially on solar energy education and will later be expanded to cover fuel cell and wind energy. LCEI professional development sessions will incorporate a specially designed curriculum aligned with the Connecticut Department of Education’s Science Frameworks, and will be offered to 9th-grade teachers from the 61 towns in the state who are participating in the 20% by 2010 Campaign.
