De La Salle University in Manila has succeeded in making a solar car prototype. Aptly named Sinag, it is believed to be the first solar car built in the Philippines. Sinag, built at a cost of P9 million, was designed to promote the use of alternative sources of energy. Its makers are joining the World Solar Challenge 2007 in Australia on Oct 21 – 28, 2007. Students and faculty members of DLSU proudly unveiled the prototype at the Fort in Taguig City recently.

Made from carbon fiber and Nomex, the lightweight speedster will compete in the World Solar Challenge and help promote the use of alternative sources of energy. The car will utilize solar cells from SunPower, which has a plant in the Philippines and reportedly manufacturers the most efficient cells in the world.

Chief-Executive Officer of Renewing Energy Company (NEAL), Mr Tawfik Hosni says his company is undertaking negotiations with the Norwegian company Statoil as regard developing electricity production through solar energy to export it to European market. Mr Tawfik Hosni affirmed Statoil, research institutes and universities as well as other national companies are working together to develop the production of diesel oil through solar energy. Algeria owns huge solar energy reserves, namely four-fold world consumption (38 billion cubic meters of annual gas production). We are trying to find appropriate means to lower expenses of nuclear power projects, which are still too high, especially as the used technology is a new ones. Some two billion dollars are required for three projects, including a power plant in Hassi Rmal, and two other projects in Naama and Al-Mghayar with over 400 megawatts productive power, says Mr Tawfik Hosni .

Solar panels recently installed outside of Lincoln Theatre, Univ Hartford, CT, USA

As many students may have noticed, the University has recently installed solar panels that track the sun near Lincoln Theater. What many students may not have known is that there have already been solar panels on the roof of Lincoln Theater since May of last year. So far, these solar panels are estimated to produce about 10 percent of the buildings consumed power. In real figures, it would be between 17,000 and 18,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity a year. While 10 percent may not seem that much, an average person living in Connecticut pays 16 cents per kilowatt-hour. When the math is done, the amount of money spent equals roughly out to about $2800. Another promising feature is that the electricity production is 10 percent higher than predicted. These estimates have yet to include the newly installed tracking solar panels which are 2.8 kilowatts in power.

RATHER cold, often draughty and with a touch of damp in the atmosphere is the typical image of the conditions in our historic churches. But a tiny Suffolk parish is rallying against that view by harnessing the power of the sun using 10 state-of-the-art solar panels to warm its congregation and light up its services. Renewable energy is still relatively rare in everyday life but yesterday St Mary’s at Lidgate, near Newmarket, embraced the modern idea thanks to churchwarden and keen environmentalist Michael McEvoy. After 18 months of planning, the church became the oldest in Britain to have solar panels installed, and the first church in Suffolk.
