PULAU KAPAS (Marang), Feb 27 (Bernama) — Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB)’s hybrid electricity supply system in Pulau Kapas is expected to come on stream in May at the latest. The system that uses both diesel and solar energy, can generate up to 100 megawatt of electricity. TNB Distribution senior general manager (region two operation) Ir Azman Mohd said the system could supply electricity to eight commercial customers comprising resort operators on the island.
Presently, the resort operators used generators to power their operations, he told reporters after inspecting the project, here Tuesday. He said the RM10.64 million project was fully funded by the Terengganu government.
Previously, TNB had implemented similar projects on five islands near Mersing, namely Pulau Pemanggil, Pulau Aur, Pulau Sibu, Pulau Besar and Pulau Tinggi, and in an Orang Asli settlement in Rompin. Azman said TNB planned to expand it operations in Sabah with such systems soon.
“We have obtained the project from the Rural and Regional Development Ministry to supply electricity in Pulau Bangi, Kudat,” he said. He also said that the company was building windmills in Pulau Perhentian, near Besut to generate power for the residents in Pulau Perhentian Kecil and Pulau Perhentian Besar. The project was expected to be completed in July.
