Two more stores operated by Safeway Inc. converted to solar power Monday in honor of the 39th annual Earth Day, being observed Tuesday.  Pleasanton-based Safeway (NYSE: SWY) unveiled the new power systems at stores in Fairfield and Placerville, two of the 23 stores in California being converted to solar power. The solar systems reduce the stores’ reliance on traditional fossil fuels, the emissions of which most scientists implicate as the chief cause of global warming. (more…)

A new clean energy system is powering Miami City Hall, making Miami the first major U.S. city to power its City Hall with solar and alternative energy.  The City Hall’s entire interior lighting system has been upgraded with state-of-the-art energy efficient lamps and fixtures. In addition, four state-of-the-art photovoltaic solar panels have been installed on the south lawn. Together, these efforts will reduce over half of the City Hall lighting load and cut the building’s energy bill by an estimated $9,000 per year.

After almost a year of hammering out details, the Erie County Legislature passed an sales tax exemption for solar energy technology.  New York State has already amended the tax law to eliminating state sales and compensating use taxes from solar energy equipment and gave municipalities the option to do the same. After a public hearing on March 27, the county legislature decided to go ahead with its plan to do the same to bring some the investment in solar energy to Western New York, said Legislator Robert Reynolds, Jr., D-Hamburg. According to data provided by New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program[1], Trinity Solar (formerly known as Trinity Heating & Air, Inc.) is the largest installer of solar power systems in New Jersey, the second largest market in the United States[2]. Since the inception of the program and according to the data provided by the Office of Clean Energy (OCE), Trinity has installed over 423 systems with the next nearest competitor only installing 197 systems. Overall, Trinity Solar has installed more than twice as many systems as any other installer and continues to increase its leadership position. In 2007, Trinity Solar installed nearly 3 times as many systems as its nearest competitor. (more…)

As more technology companies seek to extend their reach in rural areas not served by the national power grid, infrastructure provider Kenya Data Networks (KDN) has announced a partnership that will see it provide alternatively powered computers.  The company will provide hardware as it meets new environmental standards.  KDN and US-based non-profit making organisation, Inveneo, plan to provide solar and battery powered computers in rural areas to allow users to access technology with better infrastructure in place. The Massachussets Institute of Technology is expanding its solar power research from a “boutique” option to an affordable, mainstream energy solution.  To that end, the Chesonis Family Foundation is helping MIT launch the Solar Revolution Project (SRP) with a $10 million gift. The project will explore new materials and systems that could dramatically accelerate the availability of solar energy. SRP will work with other solar projects at MIT, creating one of the largest unversity research efforts dedicated to solar energy. ‘ The gift will allow MIT to focus on three elements—capture, conversion and storage—that could help make solar power a viable, near-term energy source. “Think ‘solar’ and think ‘now. This is the revolution that is implied in the project name,” said Daniel Nocera, a professor of energy and chemistry at MIT, who will direct SRP. (more…)

At least two South Shore towns are trying to qualify for a state-sponsored solar generator, to be installed on the municipal building of their choice.  Milton and Duxbury are competing in the Community Solar Challenge, the state-backed campaign that seeks to direct grass-roots enthusiasm for alternative energy into a concrete goal.  It works like this: When at least 150 donors from a town give $100 each for building new wind turbine projects, the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative installs a 2 kilowatt solar array on a municipal building in that town. The installation is valued at $25,000.
