As Germany’s solar titan Conergy cuts its forecast for a second time and solar stocks feel the pain of volatile trading, Royal Dutch Shell sells off more of its silicon-based solar business.  Last year, the European oil giant sold off the bulk of its solar business for an undisclosed amount to Germany’s SolarWorld. At the time, Shell held on to its “rural” solar business.

It’s power play of a different kind and one that many companies including Reliance Industries and Tata are betting on. We’re talking about solar power. Why everyone’s betting on the sun? CNBC-TV18 report finds out…  Bangalore-based solar power generation company, Tata BP is looking at doubling its capacity to 60 MW annually. Moser Baer is expected to start generation of solar power of 100 MW capacity by mid-2008. Sources informed CNBC-TV18, Reliance Industries, which is in the midst of setting up its 10 MW solar power plant in West Bengal, is also looking to hike capacity to up to 1000 MW per annum. Reliance declines to comment on that but it is clear that there is renewed interest from India inc in this sector.

Head of the project Ankur Sharma claimed that the car is India’s first solar car and runs completely on solar energy. He said that the basic motivation for the project comes from the depleting conventional energy resources.  The Indian Solar Car and Fuel Cell Car Projects wing of  the Delhi College of Engineering has designed and developed a solar photo voltaic driven car.

Dipal Barua from Bangladesh and Christopher Weeramantry from Sri Lanka were among the peace and environment activists from four countries honoured with the annual ‘Alternate Nobel prize’.  The Right Livelihood awards were given to the activists Friday for their contribution in the fields of renewable energy, peace and fare market practices.

Bangladesh’s top mobile phone operator Grameenphone Ltd., majority owned by Norway’s Telenor (TEL.OL: Quote, Profile, Research), has installed two hybrid solar-powered base stations in the country.  The two sites, set up on an experimental basis, at Habiganj in the country’s northeast, are designed to discharge power for three consecutive days without any sunlight to recharge them, it said in a statement. Florida Power & Light Co. said today it is working with NASA to put solar panels at the Kennedy Space Center as early as next year.  FPL said the project would produce 10 megawatts of power, which would serve about 3,000 homes.  FPL and NASA have signed a five-year memorandum of understanding to study whether it’s feasible to have the photovoltaic solar array, which would be on a 50-acre plot. The agreement also includes options for other renewable-energy projects, including biomass and wind power.

Governor Deval Patrick’s administration is launching a $68 million program today to increase the number of solar electric panels on Massachusetts homes, businesses, and schools by 600 percent over the next four years.  Patrick’s plan, which does not involve new taxes or fees, seeks to greatly simplify the process for people and businesses to get funding for promoting green power, including solar. The plan includes special incentives for buying Massachusetts-made solar panels and extra aid targeted at lower-income homeowners.
