Solar energy will be in the spotlight as researchers, engineers, architects and other renewable energy experts from the region convene at Oak Ridge National Laboratory Oct. 24-25 for the first Southeast Solar Summit.  Among the displays will be an Arizona Public Service 5-kilowatt photovoltaic solar array that will be providing electricity to one of the laboratory buildings. The array uses Memphis-based Sharp Solar’s photovoltaic modules. A concentrator photovoltaic system from JX Crystals will also be on display.

Following a recent announcement of investing in its solar affiliate, Kenmos Technology is expected to start volume production of thin-film solar cells in the third quarter of 2008, according to the company.  With a 45% direct stake in this affiliate, Kenmos will partner with NanoPV on solar cell production. The backlight unit (BLU) maker will sign a partnership contract with NanoPV on September 6. Kenmos and its related companies hold a total stake of about 60% in this affiliate, according to Kenmos.

In an Ernst & Young 2006 survey that ranked international markets by their attractiveness to renewable energy investors, Australia ranked 16th – fourth from the bottom. So it should come as no surprise that a significant number of Australians, well known in the sustainable energy industry, have been tempted by greener pastures.  Those names include David Hogg (see story right), David Mills from the University of Sydney, whose solar thermal technology is being funded in Silicon Valley, California, and the Australian citizen Zhengrong Shi, a PhD student from the University of NSW’s groundbreaking photovoltaics laboratory, who is now one of the richest men in mainland China.

Moser Baer Ltd, a leading manufacturer of compact discs, will set up a Rs2,000 crore photo-voltaic manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu to tap solar energy as India battles an energy shortage. The company expects to earn $1 billion (Rs 4,050 crore) after five years through this facility, which will make cells that help convert solar energy into electricity, and will be the first for the New Delhi-based firm. The investment will be made through its unit Moser Baer Photo Voltaic Ltd and funded through internal accruals.

There must be some form of irony in the whole thing when Sinag, the first Philippine made solar car, was unveiled on a day (September 1) when the sun seemed a bit lazy to show itself, and intermittent drizzles threatened the car’s first public test run. This, after Sinag’s original launch date fell squarely on the day Typhoon Dodong visited Metro Manila. That, however, was nothing compared to the daunting task the car—and everybody involved in its creation—had overcome and still face in the future. If not irony then, it’s metaphor.

The Advanced Energy Foundation (AEF) has launched what is to be South Africa’s very first solar car race. The South African Solar Challenge is set to take place in September 2008. Contestants will have two weeks to drive through 4150 km’s of our country’s diverse terrain, powered by nothing but the sun. The AEF has launched this scientific sporting challenge as part of its objective to promote innovation, science and technology in South Africa. “We want to raise awareness around energy and transportation technologies”, says Winstone Jordaan, 2008 Chairman of the South African Solar Challenge.

BP America is donating $1 million and a solar-powered buggy to help Discovery Green, the $80 million park scheduled to open next year in downtown Houston, achieve energy efficiency. The energy company’s gift, to be formally announced today, will pay for two solar panels that will be mounted on the park’s administrative office building and a restaurant, said Guy Hagstette, the park’s director. These panels and other non-polluting energy sources will provide at least 35 percent of the park’s electricity, Hagstette said.

Lowell solar technologies developer Konarka Technologies Inc. has entered into a development agreement with Tokyo-based Toppan Forms Co. Ltd., a maker of printable electronics and digital information technologies, according to Konarka executives. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
